Leaning towards that GeminII S524. Further review of the schematics reveals a high likely-hood that it will fit in there.

istudy92, If you don't mind me asking... which orientation do you have that HSF in on that UD3 board? If you're clearing vengeance with the closest slot occupied with the heat-pipes running parallel to the DIMM slots then I should be in business as the spacing is about the same and I'm on ripjaw heatsinks, which are a bit shorter.

-Thanks,
Eric

Unless you are using exceptionally tall memory you will be fine. Look at the design of the cooler, it is cut out underneath. We used Corsair Vengeance in his machine and the HSF was about 1/8 of an inch above it. Unless your memory is taller than the ridiculously tall heatsinks that Vengeance memory comes with, it will fit. Put the DIMMs in before installing the HSF.

This is the MB he used.

Yea the Prodigy can fit some huge heatsinks provided the board layout and RAM height accommodates it, and one is willing to run without the drive cage up top. In my case, D14 and megahalem would not fit, but no doubt on the right board they would. Some of the ASRock Z87/77 types have the socket scooted far away from the PCIE slot... those might work. I have a blu-ray drive in this build so removing the drive cage isn't an option.

Doyll,

The AXP-100 would clear the VRM heatsink just fine (it's only about 30mm tall)... I believe that this HSF would actually cool the VRMs better than the "taller" alternatives like the S524 because the fan would be in closer proximity to the VRM sink.

It would have to be arranged on the board with those heat pipes backed up against the DIMM slots. Might be 2mm over for length there... (I tried to leave some fudging room in those original measurements but...)

RX7,

I carefully studied the diagrams of the S524 and am in agreement that the "shelf" design will clear tall DIMMs, that part of the design is not my concern. Close inspection of the picts/diagrams reveal that the angled base-fins (that rise up in a series of angled "steps) and outer-most heat pipe extends over very close to the DIMM slot before reaching the height of the "shelf." That was my area of concern and I believe is where istudy92 was having a tight tolerance as well.

The area I am worried about is highlighted in the photo above. Otherwise I think this one would fit just fine.

I am thinking about running this down-draft style, with the rear-case-fan actually blowing INTO the case, and the front 230mm (yet to be ordered, looking for more options) blowing OUT of the front of the case, for a net negative pressure build that will -hopefully- prevent a heat buildup problem in the location that this machine is placed, which is a tight fit in an entertainment center. A reverse setup will probably work better in my weird application here.

One of the things I hate about the prodigy case, is that they perforated a side with no fan mounts, which translates to an area of air flow behavior that the builder has limited control over. Furthermore, the top 2x120mm fan mounts are entirely unusable (unless externally mounted) while an optical drive is installed. If they had arranged some counter-sunk impressions on the perforated side of the case and moved the top-fan mount holes back about 5mm, this little case would have a lot more flexibility in cooling solutions.

That $6 cooler probably would work then. I'm very tempted now! If you don't mind me asking, do you recall at what speed/voltage he was getting those temps at? On the stock cooler this thing runs straight to 65C even with only 3 cores at full load, seems to sort of "throttle" at that level as more load is applied.

For a good small tower cooler the True Spirit 90M will fit nicely.

Good cooler for it's size and the offset base base allows fan to fit between RAM and CPU.

Won't clear the PCI slot.. will overlap it by at least 5mm.. and similar problem over RAM.

It's all in first post of thread.

Ill see if I can get a picture of it installed on his board. I cannot remember what settings his OC was at, but I'll see if I can find out.

I just discovered, the ZALMAN CNPS9900 MAX. I can not find any information about the AMD socket mounting flexibility. I would need this to mount parallel to the PCIE slot. Base on measuring the diagrams, at the offset of the first DIMM, the height is 38mm, add to that the height of the CPU+socket (which I assume is probably around 6-8mm?), and this will clear the ripjaws with several mm to spare. The position in the case would fit, extending out beyond the board on the DIMM socket side by about 5mm, leaving a spare centimeter or so to the drive cages. Towards the top, the round profile will clear the optical drive, the maximum height of ~150mm "easily" fits the case, with about an inch to spare on top.

$51 shipped right now.. Seems like a real steal. In charts it appears to be comparable in cooling performance to a Noctua NH-C14.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118074

Now to figure out the mounting.. heck, I'm tempted to get this even if it means loosing the PCIE slot on this build.

[edit in] Bugger.. it appears to only mount one way on AMD. It would block the PCIE slot. hmmmmmm
