The new AMD Crossfire technology is available only on the R9 290 and R9 290X cards. this is due to the new XDMA engine.you can read more about it here

here are benchmarks showing improved frametimes and smoothness on R9 290X CF

So they are only claiming the XDMA tech. to be new, and not the concept of bridge-less CF? Would it really be necessary to have PCIe 3 ?
or will PCIe 2 be an improvement over CF-bridge ??

the xdma tech will work on pci-e 2.0. pci-e 2.0 is most likely sufficient and should not affect performance. if you want confirmation you will have to check R9 290X CF reviews done on pci-e 2.0 motherboards.

im running 2 290's on pcie 2.0 x8 ...

perfectly fine.. slight bottleneck on scores compared to 3.0 x16 but only minor ... ( but that may just be as im using an old i7 860 as much as the slower lanes )
