GTX 780/290X Advice

Thread Starter
Hey all, I'm in the market for getting a new GPU and I have narrowed down my choices to 2 cards: the EVGA GTX 780 Classified or the Radeon R9-290X. As someone with a water cooling setup already, I will inevitably be watercooling one of these two cards down the road at some point and overclocking them to get the most out of whichever card I end up getting. I have done quite a bit of research to see where people stand on these two cards, weighing the pro's and con's of each, and I can honestly say that I'm torn. I know that at some point the third-party boards will start rolling out for the 290X, but as I have already waited over 6 months to pull the trigger on a graphics card, I am understanding now why people say that you will never end up getting anything at all if you keep waiting for the next best thing to come out smile.gif

My initial thoughts were to go with the EVGA card, and throw it under water, seeing as how several users have reported great OC results with the Classified. However, the 290X is the "new kid on the block" and I have heard great things about the watercooling results on that card as well. My question is which would YOU personally go with if you were in my shoes, and why? I love seeing great points for either so any advice for either card is welcome. Thanks in advance to any who read this and post!

Well if you are watercooling, then the choice is clearly the R9 290X. Its faster than the 780 in most games by a good margin and the one's where it loses, the difference isn't' that much. Eitherway, both cards are great, but i would myself buy a 290X.

What would you suggest if you don't plan on water cooling and using a single 1080 screen?

not knowing exactly when non reference 290s coming out . . . hands down the 780 classy. overkill for 1080.

Second week of December if we can trust the AIB's personally I would advise you to get a Powercolor R9 290 and try to unlock it.

You can buy 2 r9 290's for slightly more than a 780 Classified and those would completely destroy the classified.
