Media Center ideas. Don't know much about them.

Thread Starter
Well I'm thinking of building a media center pc to go along with a new flat screen tv for my folks, however, I've never built one before and don't know much about it.

I do have some spare parts lying around.

I currently have....

Phenom II 965
WD Caviar Green 1TB drive
880G Gigabyte Motherboard AM3.

The television will be one of those 1080p/120hz deals, just don't know which one yet and what size.

I know the case I'll use($30) however, what do ya'll recommend for a GFX card?
I've got ripped dvds, pics and I know they will be watching Neftlix.

What else should I keep in mind?

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you will never game on it or similar you could get away with a 6450.

I agree with Beers, 6450 or if you really need to push it, a 5450 will suffice. Plays 1080p MPEGs quite happily, plus HD tv streams. Haven't tried it with Blu-Ray, but I'm confident it will do the job.

EDIT:
Also for software, check out MediaPortal, use it on my HTPC and it is brilliant. For linux support go with XBMC, but I have had problems with getting TV tuners working under XBMC on linux. MediaPortal works great with TV and managing media, so that could be a possibility.

Does your 880G board have on-board video? If it does try that out before buying a new card. My HTPC uses on-board HD3300 and plays 1080p smooth on my 55". If your board has on-board video it should be the HD4250 which should be more than sufficient as long as your not trying to play games on it. Also make sure you use DXVA compatible codecs and Video Player.

Edit: I also use Mediaportal, and the LAV filters work great with it. Many great plugins available too.
