Buy the retina iPad Mini. It will be faster, smoother and sharper. Plus it runs apple latest A7 CPU, so it'll be supported for a long time.
You can easily make out the difference between a retina and a non-retina display.
The first IPad Mini is far from crap. Maybe borrow it for a few days from your uncle before commenting... I have a couple in the house. It was my primary tablet for almost 8 months. Given I have owned pretty much every mid to high end tablet that has been released over the last 5 years (Android and Apple), using it for that span of time is significant.
Light weight, best battery of any tablet on the market (until the new ones were released), a decent screen, it is a great older generation device. My only beef with it was it could be a bit sluggish with large mkv files in video playback and I found the reading apps for IOS to be nowhere near what is available on Android. Marvin is currently the best but load a couple thousand books into it, and it would bog down pretty hard. The 4:3 layout made it fantastic for reading though.
The new retina version addresses all of the shortcomings of the original with one exception. The screen at maximum is dimmer than the original Mini. The Mini were never the brightest tablets to begin with (the new Nexus and the Samsung Tab 3 8" are far brighter) but it was still decent.
The fact that Apple dialed back maximum brightness to increase battery life is truly unfortunate.
That plus Marvin still not being a truly great reader app (Moon Reader + on Android blows it away) led me to not grab the new Mini. I've ordered instead the new LG tablet (had to get it from the US, it is not in Canada yet).
