You say things about 4gb nvidia card but they are 256 bus which wouldnt use the entire amount of vram, I mean AMD vs Nvidia , AMD takes advantage of higher vram, check this

http://www.bf4blog.com/battlefield-4-retail-gpu-cpu-benchmarks/ (780GTX 384 bits 3GB vs HD 7970 384 bits 3GB)

new games with demanding graphics engine like forstbite 3, Cryengine 3, 4A Game Engine, and games with various elements like physics and large amounts of AA and AF would need more vram

I guess it depends on how soon new games move on to new engines to make 4GB a defector standard (or at least 3GB).

But I know BF4 has been talked about a lot in terms of VR usage. Thanks btw.

R9 290 all the way. Chances of unlock are getting lower as time goes on but if you are really quick you may still get one that unlocks. Even if it doesn't for $400 it is hard to beat the performance. People complained about the noise in the reviews but mine was quieter than my 7970 before I unlocked it. Now it is a little louder, but I also bought an aftermarket cooler which will be going on soon.

So that is my vote.

If you get a GTX770 I don't know if it is worth buying another one in 6-12 months, as by that time 20nm products should be out and perhaps significantly better.
