overclock help please amd a10-6800k

Hi everyone I am new to this site and I have a question on overclocking. I am currently running an amd- A10-6800K on an asus F2A85-V PRO.. This was my very first build, I dont game thats why I went with a GPU because I wanted it to be a budget build as well. I am very interested in overclocking but I am trying to learn as much as I can before I try it. The other day I was in bios in the Ai-tweaker section and I hit the OC tuner by accident. The gpu runs at 4.1ghz but you can turbo it to 4.4 ghz. Hitthing that button has made my clock multiplier constantly run at x44 and the GPU is always at 4.4 ghz.... I reset it back into bios by putting the target cpu rate at 4.1ghz and set the clock multiplier back to auto and its still running at that capacity. I have tried to load optimized defaults option in bios and its still doing it even though it says target cpu rate 4.1ghz and the multiplier is on auto. I have done this and also have reset the bios by using the jumper. and it still is doing it... Any help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks in advance..

Sorry I realized I probably should of put this in the CPU forum.....

I don't think you did smile.gif.

I just bought the same processor but haven't gotten around to putting the build together and playing with it just yet.
Unless I misunderstand, I think that is the default clocking for this processor, isn't it?

Hey thank for replying I actually figured out what was causing it...the default is 4.1ghz but you can turbo it up to the 4.4ghz.. my clock multiplier was constantly going at x44 no matter what I was doing...Even if I was doing nothing....But there is an EPU setting on the motherboard which has to do with power saving and that was on a higher setting, when I put that back down to normal than the clock started working fine.....The EPU is just power management feature I really didnt think that would mess with it like that.... The motherboard has a TPU feature too which makes it run turbo... The initial adjustment I made was in bios. So I figured it would be in the bios that would fix it not one of the motherboard features...Good luck with the build...

Glad you were able to figure it out smile.gif
Some of these boards have so many features it takes a lot of tinkering to figure out just how they work.
It seems that documentation explaining these features is sorely lacking .

I nearly gave up on one of my favorite motherboards because I had an awful time finding information about its features. Finally I found a post in a forum that solved a handfull of problems with just 2 written lines..... why in the world didn't they put that info in manual?????lol i felt a little like I had been trolled, but was so happy to get it working right that it really didnt matter smile.gif Good luck with the new rig thumb.gif

That is very true.. Can almost all the time find better inf on the forums....This was my first build and I already want to keep adding more to it or do another build.. I dont game so there isnt really much I can do with the graphics... I see your a big fan of amd. Any advice on what voltages I should tinker with first when trying to overclock this?

I'm sorry , I just don't have any experience with this chip yet in order to give solid advice about it specifically, but in general - be patient, make small adjustments, test for stability and WATCH THE TEMPS! lol.

Sounds like the hardware bug may have bitten you, good luck thumb.gif

lol yea ...I guess ill start with the core voltage and work my way up... I just dont know if im going to need extra cooling....I have a case that has 4 fans, plus the stock cpu and psu fans so 6 all together ...the temps are usually about 20 celcius on the MB and 23-26 celcius on the Cpu .. Well thanks again for the advice and good luck with your new build as well....

I have a 6800K in another machine, I have done some tinkering....

The stock cooler has some room for tinkering, but not as far as parallel compute performance is concerned. The chip runs right at the thermal limits on the stock cooler under full load and default settings. If you shut down a module, you can get some more speed [ghz] out of it. Otherwise, fine tuning an under-volted setting on the CPU and turning down the load line calibration options has been very helpful to reducing heat problems with this chip (it can be made to run cool and quiet on the stock cooler with a mild under-clocking/under-volting). Managing the CPU side load and thermals have allowed me to run very overclocked iGPU and RAM/NB speeds on the stock cooler. (1200mhz GPU is doable).

If you want to improve the compute performance of this chip in parallel workloads through overclocking, plan on a nice big aftermarket cooling solution. I am currently trying to decide if I want to loose my PCIE slot on the ITX board in favor of this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118074&nm_mc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r-_-CPU+Cooling-_-Zalman+Tech+Co.++Ltd-_-35118074
That should make a good cooler for this chip... Probably 5ghz capable on a beefy board like yours.
