Install Server 2012 R2 onto USB?

I have a 64GB Kingston Micro USB drive that I'd like to stick in my SuperMicro internal USB header to use for the OS in a storage server. Is there any reason one shouldn't install Server 2012 R2 onto a USB drive?

As long as your keeping an active backup of the drive it should be fine.
The only reason not to use one is how the OS writes logs and data continually to the drive. When excessive writing occurs, it can kill USB thumb drives a bit quicker than normal.

More so than an SSD? I do have an extra 128GB SSD laying around but I'd rather not use it if I don't have to.

Performance will be awful, and make sure you disable the pagefile on that drive.

So just go with the SSD you're saying?

I'm saying I would never run Server 2012 from a flash drive, as it's not designed to run that way. Of course it's not a supported method, and no one really knows all the implications that may be caused by it. If it were me, I'd use the SSD if buying a drive wasn't an option (I use 60GB SSDs for OS drives in my personal servers).

The operating systems that are designed to run from a flash drive don't actually run from a flash drive. They load into RAM, and run in RAM, copying files back to the flash drive if they are changed (such as config files, for example). Windows is much to large to do this, and it's not designed to run like this.
