What all does it take to move a partition onto another drive?

Currently I have a dual booted machine using a single drive, one is Windows 7 and the other is Windows 8.1.

I want to split one of the partitions away onto a second drive and keep the dual booted configuration.

What would I use to do this?

You can't do that.
At least not without reinstalling whatever OS you want on the other partition.

When you install an OS it rewrites the boot sector on the primary boot (C:\) drive.
Among other things that boot sector tell the computer where the OS files (the Wimdows folders) are located.
If you move that folder it's OS won't boot.

There are workarounds, but they're not for the feint of heart!
You can read about BCDedit on Microsoft's website.

Duplicate the entire drive to the other drive.

Then delete Windows 7 from one drive, and delete Windows 8.1 from the other. To do this, go into COMPMGMT.MSC and delete the partition for whichever OS you're deleting. You can then use EasyBCD to delete the boot entry for the OS you deleted on each drive. It's free for personal use. EDIT: Just realized that MSCONFIG can delete the unwanted boot entry as well.

You can then extend the remaining partition to the full size of the drive for each one.

Sounds good, I'll give this a shot and hopefully it works.

Should work, as I've done this a few times with XP/Win7 dual boot drives.
