No, their job is to investigate terrorism, not just dragnet everything without any discretion or probable cause, like spying on Germany's chancellor.

CIA investigates terrorism. FBI investigates domestic issues. NSA snarfs up signal intelligence outside the US and passes along analysis. Spying on Angela Merkel may be counterproductive, but it still seems to be within their area of responsibility.

The NSA is for intelligence and counterintelligence. As far as I know I don't think they are supposed to be spy jobbing in the US unless they are helping the FBI. Everything else is fair game.

Patriot Act- Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act

The law they derive most of their power from is specifically terror-oriented. As for spy jobbing in the US, they're not specifically allowed to intercept domestic activity, but they've obviously been doing it anyway, without any regard for reasonable terror connections.

The NSA was around (whatever iteration) for a lot longer then the Patriot Act has been. The NSA abusing a "Secret" interpretation of the Patriot Act to collect bulk information about the general public in the US is problematic. That said, this article is about the NSA spying on people outside the US. That is their job. That is all I am saying. Every government has some flavor of signal intelligence and I would think it would be newsworthy if the weren't doing this sort of thing, not that they are.

Some of you totally misunderstand what the NSA were created to do. Their job is effectively the same as the CIA, to undermine and destroy nations that do not comply with the Anglo-Saxon empire and economic terrorism and annihilation at the behest of major banks, as described in Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, by John Perkins.

Terrorism, which is the new fab today, was never even contemplated when it was originally set up decades ago. The entire purpose the CIA, NSA and such organisations was, is and will be to set countries up for IMF and World Bank takeover. This is obvious when one examines the founders and their directors which all came and still come from the financial sector (major banks).

How can one be proud of their country with this kind of stuff going on? It's disgusting. No wonder the world hates the US.

excellent post. Its impossible for people on the street to fully grasp just how wide and deep this goes it is in fact THE great conspiracy. There is no way out of it either (well bitcoin, but that scares them so much they are going to either destroy it or regulate it to hell and back until they own the biggest share)

Humans = Corruption

Hence why religious groups and rules were created many thousands of years ago to help steer people in the right direction. But again corruption just sees factions fight against each other in the name of that too

I respect my government to the degree that they respect me.

edit: So I'm a cyber-terrorist at the moment...
