Budget HTPC advice needed

Thread Starter
I have finally been given the "GO AHEAD" from wife to build a HTPC, but only after a lot of groveling especially after my last build ( http://www.overclock.net/t/1369801/cosmos-2-entity-build-log ). I have 4 - 4TB drives in my Cosmos that are full of movies and TV shows and I am currently running XMBC to my Apple TV. So far I have figured out the case and that I want to go with an AMD/GPU.

Case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811204032

Budget wise I am looking 300-350 without needing the hard drives. I am not sure if I am going to use WMS or XMBC.

Any help in this will be greatly appreciated.

I've been pondering about HTPC myself, and while I don't have the components planned out yet I can at least share some of the points I'm considering

1. It has to be silent, as in passive.
2. It has to have a DVD reader at a minimum, blueRay reader to be considered as a step up.
3. It has to have gigabit network card for a hardwired line. External or internal wireless NIC to be considered as a step up.
4. Remote control, it must have one, eventually. Investigate IR ports. Wireless keyboard/moose till then
5. It has to be silent, as in passive.
6. Must obey points 1 and 5. On top of that, it has to have little to no air fans.
7. Lights inside the case, it needs none.
8. Must decide sound management. Optical sound port is best but needs other hardware (HT sound system) to convert from optical(digital) to analog for at least 2.0 sound. If no such devices exist then a dedicated soundcard and speakers purchase must be considered. TV sound has no bass.
9. See point nr. 6
10. It also must be silent

@hexaq - I've built several HTPCs that are pretty close to silent (you certainly cannot hear them at all when the television is on) using the Lian Li PC-Q27 case (it's passively cooled and the Seasonic G360 PSU exhausts warm air from the case). I did go overboard and put in a i3-3225 CPU but will drop down to a Haswell Pentium in the future as one doesn't need a lot of CPU power for normal HTPC stuff. The Gigabyte H77N WiFi MoBo has what you need (and they have updated models for Haswell CPUs). No GPU is needed as the integrated video on the CPU is fine for 1080 display purposes. I got a free IR remote with my Hauppage cable card tuner which works fine for TV purposes and have a Logitech K400 keyboard for controlling Internet streams (it also works with Windows Media center via keyboard shortcuts). I have an SSD for the OS and a 500GB WD Blue HDD for storage (I don't keep TV shows around after I watch them so don't need anything more than this). You can drop the cost by deleting the SSD but that wasn't an issue for me.

any thoughts on a cheap AMD/GPU processor to handle 1080P video?

Build! (Click to show) Here's a starter htpc build around your budget, you can add a tv tuner w/ remote later. I add a bluray drive ROM, as it tie up with your choosen costlier nmedia case with flip front (there's a cheaper one but has dvd mark which is a turn-off using a blu ray drive). This is trinity based apu setup the igpu is more than enough to play 1080p movies. I choose the motherboard on the number of sata port, it has 6 since you have 4 fully loaded hdd drive, and the extra 2, 1 for the blu ray drive and an other 1 for either another hdd or sdd in the future. I choose the ram since apu can very much utilize a fast 1866 speed & dual channel for extra performance compare to intel. I choose the psu on its price there are lower wattage but its either costlier or not true rated. all newegg.

Xnew...I literally have that build in my newegg cart. Does the AMD 5400k have any stuttering while playing HD movies. I am looking to see what deals come out for black friday and cyber monday. If its all good I will buy it over those days. Also, I am a fan of water cooling, is there enough room in that case to do a custom loop? Also, are the stock fans loud?
