Dominator Platinums are OK, if anything I suggest a freq of 2400MHz for the RAM w/that i7 3930K ... Just pick manf w/ lifetime warranty.

Why go for those when you can get the Crucial BLT2KIT8G3D1869DT1TX0? They have tighter timings and are cheaper.

I tried. It will only run 1.5 volts. So, 1866 is what I had to choose.

FYI....I'm not gaming. I render a lot. If that makes a difference in memory.

There's nothing wrong with the Platinums apart from asked price.
The $225 newegg currently lists CMD16GX3M2A1866C9 for can get you a 2400C9 TridentX set, which will be based on Samsung "D" chips that will perform and overclock much better than the Micron you're very likely to find on the 1866C9 Platinums.

EDIT: Just noticed the X79 limitation, fixed the post accordingly.

For an X79 system, why not go with a 4x4GB set like this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231639
