can your computer monitors refresh rate be to high for your computer to handle

I am looking to buy a new monitor . my computer specs are listed below on my signature . before making my decision on what monitor to buy I have a few questions . now say I buy a 144hz monitor and three years down the road my computer cant give me more then 30 fps will having my monitors refresh rate set 144hz make the picture look worst then if I was to have it set to 60hz ? so my question is can my monitors refresh rate be to fast ? and what will happen if it is ?

It would look the same.

The GPU and monitor synchronize per the refresh rate. If your game FPS is lower than that, the screen will refresh but draw a lot of the same data since there isn't any new frame data per the game.

FPS and refresh rate are not tied together.

This is actually an issue that NVIDIA is trying to solve with G-Sync.

I have a 144hz monitor and have no issues when running things at low fps so don't worry about that.

Yup agreed with the guys above. There are lots of games I can't maintain 144 FPS and it's not an issue when frames start to dip lower. Besides, with a GTX780 you're not going to have to worry about that too much - worst case is you have to lower the detail if you want to keep the frame rate up to 144 FPS. thumb.gif

Basically from my understanding, g-sync allows the GPU to control when the monitor refreshes so that It only refreshes when the GPU has rendered a new frame. This gets rid of screen tearing and makes movement smoother event at low fps. Essentially what v-sync does for your games but without the input lag and it can be done even at fps below the monitors native refresh rate.

Yup.... rsync makes the video card wait to sync with the monitor's refresh rate.

G-sync makes the monitor meet the video card's frame rate.
