help me with my rig for litecoin mining

Thread Starter
I just purchased 3 cards - gigabyte oc rev2 r9 280x for litecoin mining. I got a great deal on them! $250 each...

I figure I may not make anything but I can learn and possibly blog and share my experiences.

So far I have a p8z68-v pro with sandy bridge and a coolermaster v850 power supply. My case is HAF-x with cover off.

Do you recommend I change my motherboard, riser cards, power supply? I plan to buy a fan and point it at my pc.

Most of the other hardware doesn't really matter, just the GPU's. As long as the rest of it is functioning, the gpu's are all you really need to configure for mining. As for your case, I have the same one, and i've done plenty of tests myself and looked around to see what others say and keeping the side panel (i'm assuming that's what you mean by "cover") on is probably better. I've actually been running mine for about a week without the side panel on because it was really dirty and I was too lazy to clean it and like 10 minutes ago I finally pulled out the datavac and took it to my rig and put the panel back on - my GPU dropped 5 degrees celsius within like 5 minutes. That 200mm side fan with the duct on it actually does a really good job of pumping cool air directly onto the gpu's.

Good question. I don't know a definite answer but if the info in this thread http://www.overclock.net/t/1441118/290x-psu-power-output-tests is any indicator, I don't know if an 850 could power the 3 you ordered to begin with.

Just to add, the power supply also does matter a lot. You don't want to skimp by getting a weak inefficient power supply for 24/7 mining.
