Hey KC!

What does the event viewer say? I'd be interested in to see if any services have stopped responding during the shutdown process. You should see 6006 for ones that have entered the stop state.

You may also see Application Hang errors. Those are also of interest.

If you don't see anything out if the ordinary, or have already looked, try enabling Vebose Status http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325376.

It comes enabled by default on servers and runs on my Server 2012 R2, so it should work on 8.1. It will show you what it is attempting to shut down. If it hangs on a "shutting down services" or "shutting down apocations" we know where to look

I haven't seen any errors upon booting later on.
