i've had my i7 930 for a few years now. lately i've noticed my GTX 680 getting bottlenecked though. at this point now im thinking, should i OC and wait to upgrade, or upgrade now with a (possibly) black friday deal?

if an upgrade is recommended, what should i be looking for?

What makes you think you are being bottlenecked?

But yeah, overclock it to 3.6-3.8 at least.

100% CPU usage in certain games. FPS slowdown when i know it shouldn't be. EX. total war games, among others i can't think of atm.

look at my Core 2 haf sig rig. my lowest FPS in Metro Last light on high seems to be about 42 FPS. I'd say you should OC.

EDIT: i get high CPU usage when i'm dropping to 40 FPS in last lgiht, but, also you may just have a problem but, there are things we don't know like what resolution you are running and what gfx settings etc etc. heck it could even be the PSU going funky and things throttling.

i run games @ 1440p, usually high settings or whatever my GTX 680 can handle.

there are certain games i can run on high settings fine, like Tomb Raider i had maxed out and never had too much of an fps drop. but then i play games like total war shogun 2 and i get FPS drops all the time sitting at 100% CPU usage.

I upgraded from a 920 @4.0GHz to a 4770K @4.5GHz. It's a little more snappy, but I say OC the 930 to 4.0/4.2 and see how that goes. If it's not performing as you need it then I say you should consider an upgrade.
