Boffin gives it 40 per cent chance of return trip, but it'll be a heck of a show if it dies

On November 28, while many Americans will be sitting down to roast turkey and all the trimmings, Comet ISON faces being slowly cooked to death as it passes within a million miles of the Sun's surface.

If the comet does break up as it swings by the Sun that might be the best outcome for viewers here on Earth. Lisse said the remnants would create "beautiful feathering" over the sky around in the second week of December and the best time to view the remains will be at around 5am, or 7pm, when looking from the Northern hemisphere

Cool hopefully it burns up!

Update:
Comet Ison battered in Sun encounter
Quote:
Comet Ison was severely battered in its encounter with the Sun, and largely destroyed, it would seem.

Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer emerge.

Astronomers continue to search for the object, but it is almost certain the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" has gone out with a whimper.

Just FYI Guys, it's not completely dead thumb.gif
Link

I'm disappointed that it took such a beating but also glad something survived
post #10 of 16
coool thanks for the update!...i thought for sure it was gone, but some of it survived. The only crazy thing is said that it goes in and out i think? not sure but on the link it says it fades and then it kind of shows up again...wondering what they are trying to say?
