I went from a decent overclocking 7970GE (1225 core / 1650 mem) to a 290x, and even at stock speeds the 290x was a very noticeable upgrade. Over a 680? Definitely worth it IMO, especially for a hair over 100 bucks. Double the vram, way more bandwidth, and overall a far better performing card. That and the potential mantle has.

It looks to be about a on average 10-15fps at most improvement over a 680, if you think that is worth your 680 + $120 then do it. IMO and if I was in your position I would definitely wait for the next gen next year (GTX 800 / R9 300).

Hold off bud. I have a 290, and the stock fan can get aggravating. The performance is great, but waiting for the aftermarket cards to come out is the best way to do it. With that, you basically fix all of the problems with the card (temps/noise).

I have a gelid cooler on mine, and I felt like I should have waited for the aftermarket cards to come out. Although the temps are great, it took a lot of work to get everything on there correctly, and having something like that out of the box (looking at you, ASUS DC2), takes out 100% of the hassle and long-term worries (heatsinks falling off the thermal pads, fans going bad, etc.).

As far as going 290 or not, yes. I played through Crysis 3 overclocked, and the game was as smooth as butter. No stuttering (well a few parts dipped the framerate, complements of Crytek), no crashes or black screens (after 9.4 Beta), and I had a great time playing it.

Getting an aftermarket 290 is mandatory if you want long-term satisfaction. If you're wanting to get a 290 that unlocks to a 290x, I wouldn't try it. The benefits of a better cooler far outweigh the performance gain you get by unlocking the chip. It's a much more balanced approach. Who knows? There may be aftermarket 290s that can unlock biggrin.gif

Just my 2cents.gif

OP you have time till your gtx 680 warranty ends. wait for 2 - 4 weeks and grab a custom r9 290 like asus dcii or his iceq x2. gibbo of ocuk says early jan while kyle of hardocp says mid-dec.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18560148

the R9 290 is a nice 25- 30% faster card than a GTX 770 / GTX 680. the R9 290 grows the lead with OC as it more OC headroom. 1200 - 1250 mhz with a good cooler and voltage tweaking is possible on R9 290. wait for asus dcii or his iceq x2 and get one of those cards thumb.gif

http://www.techspot.com/review/736-amd-radeon-r9-290/page8.html

"Update: Based on your feedback, I took the IceQ X2 cooler off the HIS Radeon R9 280X and stuck it on our R9 290 sample. Cooling was dramatically improved. The FurMark stress test maxed out at 76 degrees while the card never exceeded 63 degrees in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4. So it seems as expected the board partners will be able to solve the heat issues of the reference card."

don't really need to unlock. even at stock it has Titan like performance . compare this to the one i linked earlier . . .

i7 3930k@4.8Ghz --- eVGA GTX Titan@1176/6608 --- P15768

i know the Titan can oc higher.
