It seems that way. The only thing I can think of is that people didn't like the noise levels and were actually returning the drives, thinking they were defective.

When I visited Overclock.net a lot more in the past, I recall a ton of posts (maybe 2-3 per month) from people asking if their WD Black was okay, because it was making strange/loud noises that their other drives did not make. Some RMA'd their drives and reported that the replacements made the same noise. Apparently WD Black seek noise is too loud for a lot of people - if WD was seeing tons of healthy WD Blacks being RMA'd, it wouldn't surprise me if they made a decision like this. (prioritizing noise levels over raw performance)

Well I can report this much, in addition to the benchmark results I posted, this WD1003FZEX is super quiet.

Which I did find surprising because in reading reviews of the drives prior to purchasing I did read A LOT of people complaining about how noisy they were. And yet there were those who called those people crazy, that their drives were quiet. I didn't know what to expect when I got mine.

I do think I got the impression that it was only the 2TB and above which were noisy. Not surprisingly perhaps, they are the one's with 12ms Access Times, compared to the ~16ms 1TB drives.

Did WD tune the 1TB drives for low noise over higher performance (or rather better Access Times, because the performance seems largely on par with the 12ms higher capacity drives. Though decidedly a bit lower performing.)

For my part, I don't mind a little bit of noise to get higher performance. Still these 1TB drives are quite zippy, and much better than my 12ms WD1001FALS Black drive, in all measurements except Access Times.

One more thing comparing my new WD1003FZEX with old WD1002FAEX
I've noticed that my previous WD1002FAEX was able to turn off by itself if there was no request to it...
and new WD1003FZEX spinning and making noise non stop...
Is it specific thing of FAEX series or it is possible to make the same thing with FZEX?

I have the 2TB. It is pretty quiet. Much quieter than the older Blacks I owned - on them I had to turn AAM to quiet them down at a cost to access time. I think the 2TB FZEX I have is a good balance between noise and performance.

I recently needed to get a 2TB drive. If wdc would had a 2TB blue, I probably would have gone with it instead of a black.

How are the access times on your drive? I'm considering getting the 2TB version Black. These drives beat my Samsung Spinpoint in every way except for the access times (from what I can see, my drive gets 13.8ms) and possibly noise, I do remember most Blacks being pretty loud.

Why did they have to do 800GB platters instead of 1TB? That adds an extra platter. The Blues are probably still just as good as these new Blacks, really wish there was a 2TB Blue as well.

So whats the deal?
I had two WD7500BPKX disks crap out on me.... the first one was making constant clicking noise every 1-5 minutes. It died and i got replacement which was doing the same thing. Both drives were 100% health, SMART OK.... but they were clicking!
I returned the second WD7500BPKX and now i need to choose another speedy disk. The WD1003FZEX caught my eye...
I remind you that i need a speedy storage disk because i do a lot of batch Photoshopping. Should i go with the WD1003FZEX or just get the EZEX Blue or a third non WD option?
A speedy 2.5" would be the best option since my case is a HAF XB.

Thanks!

I have an older WD Black (FAES) that's dying, so there's a decent chance I'll get one of these FZEX drives back via RMA.

Are the more recent ones still plauged by the high access times? It doesn't matter too much to me since my system drive is an SSD, but my other hard drive is a FAEX with ~12 ms access times, so ideally I'd want them to match biggrin.gif

The 1TB FZEX is a Blue drive, pretty much confirmed. 2TB and above are normal Black drives.

A discussion that links to this same thread.

I have changed the name of the thread so that it reflects what's being discussed, and to help others get more exact results when searching the forums.
