Ram Compatibility

Thread Starter
Hi all, first post after a very long time!

Currently i have 6gb of RAM installed and I would like to expand since newer games are starting to demand more RAM. Thought i'd go with 12gb in total.

Since tripple channel memory seems very hard to find, i narrowed my search down to the following set:

Dominator-GT CMG6GX3M3A1866C7 - Memory - 6 GB ( 3 x 2 GB ) Timings: CL=7, tRCD=8, tRP=7, tRAS=20 V=1.65

Basically it's the only set i can find (used) for purchase at the moment (suggestions for EU are always welcome).

Currently I have the following RAM installed :

Dominator-GT CMT6GX3M3A1866C9 - Memory - 6 GB ( 3 x 2 GB ) Timings: 9-9-9-24 V=1.65

My question is the following:

Are these two sets compatible? If i purchase the first set will I be able to expand upon my actual RAM?

I read around on forums and people seem to agree that the faster RAM will downclock itself to match the timings of the slower RAM, and that it should work.

I have my processor OC'd to 3.5ghz (140x25) and my sticks are running at 1600mhz.

Will I have to change any settings in my BIOS for the new RAM to function properly?

Thanks for taking your time reading/answering.

Mixing memory is risky.
Memory manufacturers frequently change the components that they use. Even though the model number and "published" specs may be the same, the sticks often are different.

If you want to avoid problems, spend the money and buy all your ram as a "matched" set.

I understand but that is exactly where my problem arises unfortunately.

I cant find a matching set to my current RAM since it seems it is not produced anymore, and sets from other manufacturers are also scarce or extremely expensive. The aforementioned set is the only one I could find for a decent price (65,- EUR)

Which version are your current 1866C9? (can be read from the stickers on the modules)
If it's anytthing like ver x.1x (like 5.11, for example) then you're likely to have issues due to mixing them with chips of different density.

I just checked and it is ver7.1a

Does this increase the chance of having compatibility issues?

Well I decided to not take the risk and canceled my order.

Decided to go for a 3x4gb 9-9-9-24 1600mhz kit by G-skill, one of the few tripple channel kits I could find. Unfortunately had to pay almost double as I intended but ah well, 12gb of RAM should be more than enough for the time coming.

Thanks a lot for your help guys!
