Is my SSD broken? Or is it related to something else? - Page 2

Hm, well the weird thing is that the SSD worked fine for about 2 months while in the laptop.

I do have another pc I could test it on, hopefully that will give me some concrete results.

UPDATE: SSD works fine on another PC with SATA3 ports. So the laptop is the problem. Could reflashing BIOS/clearing CMOS help?

Ah, didn't see the update-edit, next time just make a new post so we can get topic reply notifications wink.gif

But yeah, so the laptop is obviously the problem. Updating/reflashing the bios or clearing the CMOS might help, you wont lose anything trying that. smile.gif (disclaimer: unless something goes horribly wrong for some unknown reason)

If not, the problem is most probably then faulty hardware, either the physical connectors in the laptop (works enough to transfer at slower speeds, but makes too many errors on higher speeds) so check if you can see dust or other crap in the connectors, or if the cabling looks like damaged. The whole SATA controller could be damaged, in which case probably the whole laptop mobo needs replacing, and it's most probably cheaper to just buy a new laptop in that case.

But well, that's pretty lame. I suppose this won't fall under warranty then? The laptop is about 2 months old.

I'm having a hard time clearing the CMOS actually. Just to be sure, after clearing an uefi bios cmos, should all settings revert to default?

Well, faulty hardware falls under warranty (unless the warranty terms state otherwise, which they usually don't, or you caused the failure by yourself, which you didn't). However, for RMA you probably need to put the original HDD back in, and since the problem don't appear with the HDD, you need to either state clearly that the problem is with the SATA port/controller, since it fails on faster drives. Or ask if you can send it for fixing with the SSD, so that they can actually see that the problem is with the controller.

And yes, with a reset all settings should reset to default. Except in some cases security settings are kept (BIOS passwords and such).

Still haven't been able to install Windows.
Interestingly, I can install Ubuntu. Runs like a charm, well except for usb detection on boot.
But that is probably just a driver issue.

Could it be that, even though Windows setup recognizes my SSD, it still needs drivers for working with it properly?
If so, that would be really weird. I didn't need those when I installed Windows for the first time. I do have an other bios version since then. Maybe it is related to that...

Will attempt some tests on Ubuntu in the meantime.

Ah I found the reason why Ubuntu is working.

For some reason it switches the SATA Link speed to 3.0Gbps (a.k.a. SATA II). If I interpret the logs right, it seems it is frozen at first.
This produces a lot of errors, and then it hard resets the link. This unfreezes the device and makes it usable.
Code:

Thread Starter
I tried something else this time. I used the SSD from my desktop in my laptop.
Didn't really want to do this, since it's kind of a hassle.

Anyway, the SSD from my desktop (Corsair Force GT 180GB) works perfectly fine in my laptop! So I think it actually is the SSD, instead of the laptop.
That's also the impression I get when searching on the internet about the log I posted earlier.

Could the SATA controller somehow conflict with the SSD, maybe killing it gradually or preventing it from working at all? Should I just RMA the drive?
If I RMA it, how should I explain it? I can only reproduce this problem on my laptop. The laptop SSD works fine in other computers, or so it would seem.
