Connecting 3-4 Fans to 1 Channel on Fan Controller

Thread Starter
I am doing a complete water cooling rebuild, and am going to increase my fan and radiator count. However this is the first timeI will be using a fan controller, and I just am wondering what is the best way to connect 3-4 fans to 1 channel. These are the fans I will be using. http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36_1130_69_1052&products_id=32928 and this is the an controller, http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=48&products_id=35543 I believe I will be ok connecting 4 fans per channel correct? Since 1.67/.18 should give me plenty of breathing room when using 4 fans.

For connecting the fans to the controller, I can either use these I guess http://www.frozencpu.com/products/7300/cab-112/Koolance_4-Fan_Wiring_Harness_-_3_Pin_CBL-NX006P.html?tl=g2c251s635 or I thought to make it much cleaner, I can cut and put all 4 fans to 1 3 or 4 pin connector, by just soldering them together correct? Would make for a much more cleaner build (and I do have plenty of soldering experience).

Let me know what you guys think, and if 4 fans per channel is ok to do, if so I should be all set, I definitely want a clean build tho with the least amount of wires possible.

Thanks guys
Sig Rig

Each of those fans uses 0.18A x 12V = 3W (for the 140mm version, the 120mm is a bit less and the 200mm/230mm versions are a bit more).

The controller supports 20W per channel so you're absolutely fine smile.gif

As you say you should be well within the load tolerance for each channel. All I will say is just make sure you get a quality controller as I have had a couple of cheap ones in the past where I have run them under there rated wattage with a couple of fans but they have still blown. Hasn't caused an issue but proved to be false economy as they've had to be replaced. Not really up on who makes a good controller these days but I'm sure there's plenty of people who'll be able to chime in.

what about connecting 4 fans to one channel? what is the best route?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation on a fan controller or is the one I listed ok?

Thanks!

How about this one? Good reviews and more in my price range lol. http://www.xoxide.com/sunbeam-rheosmart-6-fan-controller.html

Im pretty sure it can still hold 4 fans correct? Maybe even 5 since its 30w? Or is my first choice better?

from what i found the sunbeam fc definitely has more review support vs the akasa fc. however, in my opinion, it really comes down to build quality with fan controllers. they're both good options, whichever one you find more aesthetically appealing and are most comfortable running your fan set up.

MoBo headers are typically rated for 1 amp .... some enthusiast MoBos 2 amps....so add up all ya fan amps, multiply by 2 so as to provide a factor of safety for "inrush current" and if ya under ya header amp rating ya fine....

Controllers tend to be a bit more robust.....

If ya fan controller rated at 20w per channel.....that's 1.67 amps ..... or 0.83 amps accounting for inrush current

At 0.18 amps, you should be OK w/ 4

Though it would be much simpler (and cheaper) to use one of these

Non PWM

Phanteks has one that takes PWM signal and sends out to 3 pin fans..... right now only way to get it is w/ their case, but as of january shud be available to all.
