What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years?

I would say the best thing to happen to computers is a combination of 2 things. 1 being multi-core cpu's utilizing several threads to increase multi tasking capabilities and number 2 being IPC increases to boost single threaded performance. I remember my old P4 540J which was considered pretty decent in it's day taking hours complete intensive media tasks. Now it takes my current rig 15 minutes and I can game while waiting lol.

What stands out most for you?

The Radeon 4XXX and the Nvidia GTX 2XX series cards. They seemed like such a quantum leap forward in terms of gaming power enabling features that were once thought of as impossible. I still have a GTX-260 and 4830 as back ups wink.gif

What are your favorite memories?

Being so blown away by the graphics of my first performance gaming PC I ever built out of all aftermarket parts (AMD Dual, 4830,4 GB)]

Where do you think the next 10 years will take us?

Unfortunately I am one of those nay sayers that believes that the mobile arena's influence on downsizing tech will ultimately make the desktop PC part of a bygone era. Why make a product 50X the size and weight when the smaller one can do the same job from the palm of your hand ? I think the performance PC arena will still exist for years to come, although growing smaller and less accessible as time moves on.

Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers?

I'd say yes because we as overclockers will find a way to OC a pocket calculator just to do it lol. I think regardless of downsizing tech, tweakers will tweak on. Gaming will depend on the success of the steam box and similar products ability to compete against current/next gen consoles.

Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

See above ^^ Although not immediately but some day down the road downsizing will have it's day in the sun.

The move from single core processors to multi-core processors. In a similar vein, AMD'd recent emphasis on GPU compute. Fave memories? Phenom II 955BE.

Who can say? Hopefully seeing what comes after silicon. Of course smile.gif
Desktops may not be standard, but they will most certainly still be commonplace. Some point to the fact that smaller devices are getting more and more powerful and say we won't have to use desktops anymore in the future. But they're ignoring something pretty obvious - desktops also keep getting more powerful. In the future we'll have even more demanding applications, applications which will only run on something with huge and versatile compute performance, like a PC.

1) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you? What are your favorite memories?

The best thing to happen to computers in the last ten years would be.. An improved and refined version of multicore processors both for home and business use and commercial use. (i.e. ASOCS ModemX 128 core). What stands out most for me are how far games have come in the last ten years as well. My favorite memories are when I built my first PC, when I water cooled my first PC, and when I first played DayZ.

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

I think the next ten years will take us into a world where VR and Occulous rift style gaming become house hold names. Will it be a good place? Heck yes! I think overclockering will become more mainstream for some people and I hope new companies will come out with fresh ideas or products on how to supplement that. I don't see desktop going anywhere as long as there is a community dedicated to pushing their limits and making works of art.

Steam Sales, Gabe Newell

10 years is a long time looking looking ahead, but when you look back you see that not much has changed. Of course mobile stuff is going to be much much bigger than desktop PCs, but I am certain the good old clunky PCs are still around.

1) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you? What are your favorite memories?

USB 2.0. Hands down. I remember in school needing floppy discs, and then suddenly I had a USB flash drive that was faster, way smaller, and held 100x as much as the floppy. And all of a sudden you could share EVERYTHING. I could go to a friends house, and we'd share 1000's of MP3's, where before that would take so long it just wouldn't happen. Now we can boot an entire OS from USB 2.0 flash drives. We can plug a printer into a USB port, and not need the huge dedicated pin port. Every mobile phone uses it as the standard hard IO for the device. I remember the day when I got my first USB 2.0 external hard drive. It was amazing.

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

I see computers becoming more integrated. Whether we like it or not, the CPU and GPU will be on the same chip. Bridges and different interfaces will be the thing of the past, and everything will be wireless, from the monitor to headphones.

But one thing is for sure: Keyboards will never die.

Introduced to online gameplay with Jedi Outcast on Dial up. struggling getting higherspeeds for a year! still kicking digital booty with my Sith apprentice smile.gif

I do think smaller form factor PC's will reign I expect to see 4 PCI-e (SLI/xfire) mATX/m-ITX using 3d arrays to acommodate everything in a different array. As in it wont be straight line anymore.

For example GPU on bottom of MOBO instead of top (3 in bottom 1 in side/top) this will make PC thicker but smaller , More precise cooling will make the use of fans cosmetic or minimal, and it will be basically us oldschool guys saying its required even know all study shows maybe 1 degree improvement.

GPU's becoming smaller and more energy efficient. the PCI slots will be half the size of now and therefore save space biggrin.gif

stuff like that

DITTO thumb.gif

My fav memory was also playing dark forces series online. (Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy)
I also spent HOURS making huge npc battles on various maps & then laying waste everywhere spawning rancors tongue.gif

I also loved CFS2, Mechwarrior 4, Neverwinter Nights & KOTOR

Most significant advancement to me was 64bit OS & Direct 2 Drive (followed then by steam)
It kinda sucks having all your games online tho, because there used to be real work put into game manuals & extras:

The Jane's combat series set is the one that I remember the most--their flight physics weren't the best, but the game's control scheme & your copter's systems had so much depth by comparison... Kinda like what the DCS series is built on today. Good times thumb.gif

I know the printing companies for game boxes & manuals gotta hate the downloads, but I think I still hated losing CD keys more thumb.gif

I will NEVER find that Combat Flight Simulator 2 cd key.....

The biggest thing that happened to computing over the last ten years:
I think it's the iPhone.

The biggest thing that will happen to computing over the next ten years:
Hopefully we'll get somewhere with graphene. We will either break through the silicon barrier, or cloud computing will become so ubiquitous that we don't really have to.
Also, an improved interface. I think that some genius somewhere is going to come up with a viable alternative to the keyboard and mouse. I have no idea what it will be.
