C= Commodore,

PI

PII

PIII

PIV

Core 2 Duo

Core 2 Quad

i3/5/7 1st gen

i3/5/7 2nd gen

i3/5/7 3th gen

i3/5/7 4th gen

these are the ones I own(ed)... --> getting old here tongue.gif it started in 1988 for me... All memories... But I had a period in my life where I missesd the part of playing together in front of just ONE computer (with 2 mice or 2 joysticks etc...)

Core 2's and GTX graphic cards are the breakthrough in my opinion. Later the i-proc's ofcourse.

2)

Who knows what the future might bring??? Skynet? I sure hope so! tongue.gif

I guess we'll start communicating wireless with eachother one day... We'll all become Cyborgs. And we have a "built-in router" in our head so we can give acces to people we want and block others wink.gif --> Let's just hope nobody hacks us (our own head???)

1) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you? What are your favorite memories?

While there were a lot of amazing innovations, I would have to say SSD's. They are by far the biggest singular upgrade you can make if you still have a HDD.

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

This is a hard one. Honestly, I think that while GPU's have a ton of headroom still for improvement, eventually we will near a point where we do not need faster processors on a consumer level. Already, we are seeing CPU's with overclocking disabled or soldered onto the motherboard. Thankfully, gaming will always be around as we love our shiny toys. I believe that as internet connections improve, we will be inevitably pushed into the "cloud age" and mobile computing once mobile processors and internet connections have reached a certain point.

1) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you? What are your favorite memories?

Multicore cpus, ssds, ram increasing in speed and size, windows xp

The APU will be king soon, not amd as such but the gpu and cpu on the same die, desktops will shrink in size with more innovative cases and hw getting smaller marketed at the 'living room' more than the desk. Remember 10 years ago thinking we would be using 10ghz cpus by now so I'm probably wrong smile.gif

I consider the progression of the hardware to be one of the best thing that have happen in the last 10 years. We can now do more, faster than ever using software that allows consumers to create professional content and enjoy virtual reality easier than ever. My favorite memories are from live gaming tournaments, the Toronto overclock.net LAN included smile.gif

I'm worried about cloud computing getting bigger. We are already seeing hardware clouds for graphics, its only a matter of time before all you need is a monitor and internet connection. Pay a subscription fee for high-end graphics or faster processing... I will always be a hardware enthusiast and have my own gear, but this would allow more power to mobile users.

mmo and steam having everything on one account that cant be lost

well for gaming think turn more mobile or media center based, but hardware will have to change because the circuits architecture on silicon-based computer chips are expected to shrink as small as they can physically become, prompting a search for alternative materials to take their place. Such as carbon nanotubes called graphene, ( a two-dimensional material made from a single layer of carbon atoms)

Thought this may be relevant,

StatCounter’s browser usage data for January 2014 shows that desktop browsers accounted for 71.89% of visits, while mobile (smartphones) accounted for 22.42% and tablets accounted for just 5.69%. Most people are clearly using desktop web browsers to access the web. If they’re not, they’re probably using a smartphone browser — tablet browsers are far behind.

1a) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you?

Hardware -
Dedicated Graphics busses
Serialization of busses
64bit CPU and 64bit "BIOS" (uefi)
Multi-Core CPUs nearly Universal on Desktops
Mega-Multi Core APUs

Software -
Increased Industry provision of user control eg: Overclocking Options standard
Growth of Linux
Success and expansion of Steam

1b) What are your favorite memories?

Accidentally discovering DOS 3 in ROM on an ancient RS 8088
Hot-swapping BIOS chips on running PCs for mods
Celeron 300A for the lessons it revealed/taught
Video Card Upgrades! all of them!
LCD Monitors - Advent of huge screen real estate
Doom, Quake, HalfLife, World of Warcraft
Learning Linux - reclaiming MY PC as my own

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

There is no doubt that Mobile will be the biggest growth sector but I don't see Desktops disappearing for many years anymore than people will give up cars for mass transit and for similar reasons - Personal Flexibility and Control. Desktops won't disappear. Consoles, at least as we think of them now, will.

With the increase in convergence, such as is beginning to take shape with KDE Connect (controlling your PC remotely with an Android smartphone) the value of both are increased - Convenience, Mobility and Upgradeable Power without losing User Control.

I think VMs will become so integrated that separate Operating Systems will become superfluous especially for SOHO use, where parts of any can be used on-the-fly like "Legos" of code.

1a) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you?
Multi-Core Processor
Dual GPU Cards
The Progressing of Watercooling

1b) What are your favorite memories?
I remember as a graduation gift, mom got me a 'puter with a PIII 500Mhz, and I about s**t the bed at the speed. Everything I used before where the PII 233Mhz (Klamath). Those were good times!

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?
I believe as long as it has a processor, Overclocking will be around. Well desktops aren't standard now, but there will still be a calling for them then.

1) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you? What are your favorite memories?

Multi core processors. Speed improved enormously, all while using less power. The sandy bridge architecture as a whole deserves mentioning too.
LCD monitors. Before 2004 they were very expensive, but now they are bare minimum. Its very nice to have so much screen space while keeping desk space.
The Nvidia 8800. Never actually owned one, but it was such a leap forwards.
Here's one nobody mentioned; 120mm+ fans. It's so nice to have a pc that doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner like they all did 10 years ago.
Windows 7
Broadband internets. Not even fancy fibre, Just ADSL2.
As for gaming, The highlight of the last 10 years has got to be half life 2. It changed everything. Steam is very nice too, but it is actually slightly older than 10 years.

Also, See last paragraph.

Favourite memories would be:

My old laptop that I got in 2005. It was so much better than of the ancient desktops that I'd had at that point, and it was my main machine for many years afterwards. It's as tough as nails and in a subjective way is the best computer i've ever owned.
Playing half life 2 for the first time.
Upgrading from a pentium 4 to a pentium dual core, and then the just as enormous leap forwards to an overclocked 2500k.

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

The next 10 years will be taking us nowhere really. Mobile platforms won't ever replace desktops. It's like saying all cars will be replaced by mopeds because traffic is so bad. Desktops are so much more suited to the majority of tasks that they aren't going anywhere.

Sales might be dropping, but people are just seeing less of a need to upgrade as the tech stays newer for longer than it used to. I've had my gtx460 for 3 years, and it still runs new games nicely. In the 1990s for instance, some games didn't even run at all on year old cards the tech was leaping forwards so much. We are always moving forwards, but it is calming down some now.

1) What were the best things to happen to computers over the last 10 years? What stands out most for you? What are your favorite memories?

A. The "R"Evolution when up to fast the way I see.
B. Storage Disk. I remember the with a hack tool we could format a 1.44MB floopy disk to 2.MB capacity. since them the zip drive of 100MB and next was a CDR with
Code:
Data writing speed Data writing rate Write time for 80 minute/700 MB CD-R
1× 150 kB/s 80 minutes
2× 300 kB/s 40 minutes
4× 600 kB/s 20 minutes
8× 1.2 MB/s 10 minutes
16× 2.4 MB/s 5 minutes
20× 3.0 MB/s 4 minutes
24× 3.6 MB/s 3.4 minutes
32× 4.8 MB/s 2.5 minutes
40× 6.0 MB/s 2 minutes
48× 7.2 MB/s 1.7 minutes
52× 7.8 MB/s 1.5 minutes

That time I used to care a lot data going back and forth. The worse was to carry data on floop disk with 50 disk and during the file join you found out the last disk file was borked and you could not join all the file and you had to split and format each disk and write the new data split file over and over.
C. having Pam as my background smile.gif

2) Where do you think the next 10 years will take us? Will it be a good place for Overclockers and PC Gamers? Will desktop computers still be standard, or will our mobile overlords finally have their day?

A. Only time will tell us. I still think the next 10 years car going to run on wheels but computerized 100%.
B. Somme pp, saying is going to die and OC will not going to be much as we think. for me it will going to exist anyways.
C. I don't think the mobile thing going to replace any RiG out there at least for the next 30 to 50 years from now.

PS: Now i can carry 100 data them before in my pocket "less junk" Thank you the "R"Evolution.
