4670k Insane temps. Unstable at stock

Just got my 4670k and Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H, installed everything. Went to run IBT with my h80i, temps spiked to 94c immediately shut my system off (this was at 4.4 1.25 vcore 1.8 vrin, 1.15 ring). Checked my h80i wasn't mounted properly. Noticed that the tubing is being bent and stressing the mounting of the h80 to the point where it wont make good contact with the cpu because haf912 with a rear mount and dual fan is too tight. Grabbed the stock cooler and cleaned the crap paste off and put some mx-4 on the cpu after cleaning it properly. Booted up temps seemed normal, ran ibt at stock temps shot up to 86c on standard and it quit on the second loop with a max temp of 91c. Again removed the stock cooler, cleaned, and reapplied paste. I seperated the heatsink from the fan and pressed/rotated it on the cpu ihs to make sure the paste was covering. With everything re-mounted I booted up and ran IBT standard once more, quit on the second loop saying system was unstable and it hit a max temp of 86c. Does haswell really get that hot at stock, or did I just happen to get a crappy sample with terrible stock paste under the ihs?

Not sure about Haswell but the first and only time I tried for 4.5 on my 3570k I hit 95c within seconds of starting IBT.

There's your problem

Welcome to Haswell, enjoy learning to stability test instead of stress test unless you have way overkill cooling and delid

Yeah Haswells run hot. IBT will produce very high temperatures when run with AVX2. But I have yet to run into a real world application that got even close to IBT temperatures, so don't worry too much about your temps when running IBT. I also have found OCCT to be a better test of stability than IBT, I ran IBT for 15x on my 4670K @ 4.4GHz/1.16v and passed, while OCCT would BSOD until I upped the voltage to 1.18v.

Understandable. Still bothers me that even at stock it can't pass ibt and gets that hot, didn't know it was that bad. *Gets x79 rig back*

Sure, Haswell gets hot when you're benching >200gflops. I'm sure x79 CPU's would too if they were capable of it
