Question regarding TV Tuner Cards for my HTPC

Thread Starter
I've never owned a TV Tuner Card before, so I had a few questions before I buy one for my HTPC. My ISP/Cable provider is Cox, and right now I have a sort of basic cable subscription. No HD channels, but I get stuff like FX/Comedy Central/TNT/etc in SD. If I were to purchase a TV Tuner Card for my HTPC, would I be able to watch these channels through the Windows Media Center? Would it be compatible with all of the channels I'm currently receiving from Cox?

This is what I was thinking of getting: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 Media Center Kit Dual TV Tuner w/ IR Remote PCI-E x 1

I have that Hauppauge tuner with my set up and Verizon FIOS and it works fine with Windows Media Center. I have a more expensive package than you do with HD TV and several premium channels and the video is great.

Just wanted to add in order to decrypt encrypted digital video streams you will need a tuner card with a M-card port on it such as this. Every cable company in the US must offer M-cards so that users can use their own equipment. Many companies charge nothing for the first M-card, but the charge is carrier specific.

If all you have is an analog lineup with no cable boxes then just about any card should work.

Yeah, no cable box. The connection would be going straight from my wall to my PC with one of those coaxial cables. Would the Hauppauge TV Tuner be alright in that case?

If you are interested with three tuners the hd homerun prime is on sale for 99 bucks. It can also stream channels using an xbox 360.

Sounds like all your channels are analog, you need to find a NTSC tuner. HDhomreurns wont work.
