Open system better?

I didn't know where to post this so here goes smile.gif

Long story short, would it help with overall cooling if I took my parts out of the case and kept it on top on a desk (with the motherboard sitting on top of it's box)?

I bought a used XFX 4890 which was a little iffy to overlcock. I pencil-modded it and got a nice bump but with temps significantly increasing. Now I was wondering if I keep everything open-air and put a 120mm fan in front of the GPU, would it be worth it?

It /might/ help but in all honesty... assuming your pc is the ol' faithful you have listed you might get better results if you can up the airflow of the intake fan. Usually open systems work out better if you have a case with which you're swapping out components daily or have really.. really bad airflow.

From what I can see in the pictures the intake airflow is what might be holding you back if using a low CFM intake fan since the GPU is sitting a slight bit higher up with an mATX board due to the slot positioning. Further, have you also used a program such as speedfan, MSI Afterburner, or otherwise to ramp up the fan speeds on the GPU earlier? If not, doing so may help your clocks stabilize more.

Open is cooler i think, but maybe a bit more noisy if you have loud GPU fans because the noise will be less reduced without a case around it.

And open is also more dangerous of course because you can touch the components while your pc is running, but that's a no-brainer smile.gif.

The noise is definitely one issue that can occur... imagine a few delta fans which are otherwise muffled with the case at full speed ph34r-smiley.gif . Not to mention the risk of exposure to the family pet such as a cat.. lachen.gif

I have found that depending on the case and the airflow one can get mixed results. If one has a case setup with good airflow often opening it up can cause a rise in temperatures. This could usually be attributed to certain configurations creating an effective 'wind tunnel' effect which gets disrupted with the case opened.

Thanks for the replies everybody smile.gif

I set up the system and overall temps on all components came down by about 5-7 degrees thumb.gif

Great to hear you got good results from it! Only thing I must warn of though looking at the pics is to ensure you have some form of insulator under all those components on top of the case if you intend to leave it there like that. The paint/powder-coat can only insulate so much until it gets even the slightest scratch eventually causing a short via ground.

Wish you the best in your overclocking with the card!

The motherboard is on standoffs which I ghetto mounted. That way it's not touching the case directly (which itself is on top of a stool)

Thanks for the advice, though smile.gif
