Which component should I upgrade for better gaming performance?

Hi All, so my current spec:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83G OC 3.40G
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Deluxe
RAM: Mushkin XP2-8500 Xtreme Performance 2GB x 2
Video card: ATI 4850 x 2 crossfire
Power supply: THERMALTAKE Toughpower 750w
Hard drive: one SSD, two hard drive in RAID0.

With this spec, I'm having a low FPS running TESV: Skyrim with the official high res DLC. My goal would be running a bunch of high res texture mod + ENB + other things and get a nice playable FPS, I'm not sure if I'm asking too much for this old gear, and I don't even know if my power supply could handle the new upgrades with the 2 hard drive and one SSD in there... So here I am, hope you guys can give me some suggestion for upgrading, thanks! thumb.gif

Your system is really old and any major upgrade would be bottle necked severely. i recommend you save up a bit more and get a new system instead.
if you really need to have an upgrade i would say the GPU.

Hello there!

Best gaming performance will no doubt be a new graphics card. CPU is actually decent enough to handle most games today.
So invest in the best GPU you can afford from either Nvidia or AMD now, and you should see a good performance increase. If you are on a budget you could always look for last gen used, lot's of good deals on them now like the GTX 670/680 and 7950/7970 which still are very powerful cards smile.gif
New I would look at GTX 770 or 780, or the 290 and 290X. All very strong and good cards.

If you have a decent cpu, a gpu upgrade will ALWAYS give you the most performance increase in games.

@Phenomanator53, actually no. Although it's not the latest and greatest, the Q9550 is pretty strong still. Yes compared to a 3770K or 4770K it's weaker, but it can play just fine with a strong GPU.
So a GPU upgrade will be best way for him to increase power now, and he can save up to a new CPU after that.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't been monitoring the video card world for some time now, I'm looking at a price range around $200-$300. Seems like 780 and 290 are too expensive for me, I'm more looking at 760 or 7950, not sure if they are of similar performance though. But I'm worried that even with the video card upgrade, I'm still not able to get a playable skyrim with a bunch of higher meshes/texture mod...
