I thought my old compaq needed a format. So here I go and go get my oem xp cd and install and everything and use my compaq product key. After some google I find out that I can't do this? I must use retail cd? with retail compaq? I get it to work but product key doesn't work (the one on the compaq) and it says I have 30 days to activate. Please Help me! Thank you.

Open up the Activation window, use the "activate by telephone option" call Microsoft, tell them you had to reformat because of a virus, and they will give you a new code. Its simple. Just remember, they will probably ask you what kind of a computer you have, so make sure you tell them its a compaq.

Really? I am sorry but it wouldn't seem that simple.

Ok, your gonna do what I said above, open the activation window, and then pick the country you live in, and it will give you a number. At the bottom of the activation windows there is going to be a 35 digit or so number string, with each 5 or so digits being seperated by a dash. Your going to call the number, and its going to be a recorded message, you will be prompted to say the program you are attempting to register. Say Windows XP. Next you will be prompted to read the 35 digit number line, do so. After that you will be connected to a live person that will ask you afew questions. They are on the lines of "How many times have you installed this operating system", "What type of computer did it come with (for registered OEMs)" and, " Is this operating system currently installed on any other computers", you will say "This will be my first time re-installing", "A compaq", and "This is the only computer". After that she will look up the activation key and tell you what it is. You will enter it into the text boxes, press next, and your windows will be activated. Nothing hard.

EDIT: The reason your windows did not install was because it has only already been installed once, you can only install windows once before you have to go through the live registration, at least in my experience.

No, you dont have to tell them you have a virus, though it is a good excuse as to why you would reformat your computer. Personally I think its the best excuse. You could always tell them your HDD broke and you had to buy a new one, or you decided to RAID you HDD.
