Replacement for Gamecom 777 Headset - Steelseries vs Corsair vs Plantronics

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
My Plantronics Gamecom 777 7.1 USB headset snapped into two after a little over two years of use, and I would like some input in choosing a replacement.

Aside from its obvious lack of build quality, the Gamecom777 was extremely comfortable and had superb sound quality when used with the included Dolby USB soundcard.

My requirements are a price range of $90-100 maximum, virtual 5.1 or 7.1 capability, comfort for long periods of use, and finally I would prefer something more durable than the bulky plastic Gamecom 777. wink.gif

These are the four headsets I am considering right now. Personally I am leaning toward the Steelseries Siberia v2 for its size and weight, but the price for the version with the USB 7.1 soundcard is considerably more expensive than the Gamecom 780.

* Corsair 1500 v2 USB 7.1 ($80)
* Steelseries Siberia v2 with 7.1 USB card (~$90)
* Steelseries 5H v2 with USB 7.1 ($60 on sale)
* Plantronics Gamecom 780 (~$65)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here is my review of the Gamecom 780. http://www.overclock.net/products/plantronics-gamecom-780-surround-sound-stereo-pc-gaming-headset/reviews/6423

If you have any questions please ask.

ALSO since it is blackfriday, maybe someone you know has a discover card? Keep a watch on the headset deals. Screenshot everyone you can come across that you think you might like. If you purchase with discover, most of the time they pricematch from now until January 1st wink.gif

NINJA EDIT TIME: I believe the 1500 series headset is on sale at NCIX, and the 1300 headset is as well.

Have you compared the 780 to any other headsets?

I am leaning toward the Steelseries Siberia v2. I have tried that and the Astro A40; the Siberia v2 seems to lack bass and the sounds seem to be muted as compared to my old Gamecom 777.

If I decide to keep the Siberia v2, I am going to get a soundcard for it. Should I get the Steelseries USB 7.1 soundcard or an internal ASUS Xonar DG? Is there a significant difference in audio quality with one or the other?

OCN recommendations
Take the Xonar DG/DGX over the USB. And use XonarSwitch/Unixonars/Dolby Home Theatre (links in the club thread).
XonarSwitch has Luis U's 7.1 virtual speaker layout integrated.

And for headphones my recommendation would have been SR850/HD668B/HD681Evo/HD681.
With a Zalman Clip-On or random table mic.

The AKG GHS 1 looks like a good deal but I would prefer not getting supra-aural headsets. Can you recommend any other headsets (not headphones) at or under $90 that deliver similar performance to the AKG GHS 1?

One other thing, when I tried the Astro A40s, everyone else in the room could clearly hear what I was listening to. The Siberia v2 and my previous Plantronics did not have this issue. So if anyone has some experience with any of the headsets I listed above, I would appreciate it if you could let me know how loud and noticeable they are to other people (I need one that does not bleed too much sound).

The only comparison I have is my brother's turtle beach p11 headset, and the 780 kills it in value, build quality, and sound.
