Running Xonar Essence STX and ATH-AD2000x NEED SETTINGS(/HARDWARE) HELP?

Thread Starter
I use this setup mainly for music and for gaming occasionally. I haven't messed with the EQ settings at all due to pretty flat headphone response curve, but I have encountered something odd.

When I increase impedance (+12db or 18db using the Xonar Essense STX Audio Control Center) the sound gets louder but I also notice differing volumes in the audio I'm playing back.

The volume feels less flat, like certain words or instruments seem lower in sound while others seem louder, which makes things seemingly more enjoyable (at similar volume output ratings like windows would be on 15 typically but with high impedance settings its 5-10). I've also noticed slightly more distortion (evidently visible in game sounds and in lower quality compressed MP3's.

I'm at odds as to why this is, or am I just hearing things and my mind is playing games.

I would just like to know what settings people recommend and what exactly is the reason for my hearing these differences.

If anyone recommends new hardware either like a new soundcard, or dedicated DAC or headphone amp I'm also all ears.

I'm completely clueless when it comes to audio hardware, although I understand most terminology and appreciate good sound thumb.gif

Thank you in advance biggrin.gif

I believe the problem is that you are running higher gains in the setting than 0dbA gain, considering that the AD2000X I believe is roughly 32 Ohms resistance--which in turn is causing the distortions. Usually you should stick with the gain most suitable for your headphones like if the resistance is 250-600Ohms then you'd increase it..
