Upgrading my GPU

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,
I want to upgrade my GPU, currently I have Radeon HD 5850 1GB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103085)
Here is my build (also in sig):

ASRock Z75 Pro3 LGA 1155 Intel ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core i5-3450 Ivy Bridge 3.1GHz
DIAMOND 5850PE51G Radeon HD 5850 1GB
CORSAIR 16 GB DDR3 1333
CORSAIR HX Series HX850 850W PSU

My budget is No more than $230. But I'd rather go under $200 in ideal circumstances

I'm hoping to play BF4 on a pretty decent setting,
Otherwise, I casually game classics, typically will play the new Assassins Creed games on high settings when they come out (disliked AC3).

Here are the cards I am looking at, but am completely open to taking a look at other ones you guys think I should use!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202049 <- SAPPHIRE 100364-4GL Radeon R9 270X 4GB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161404 <- HIS IceQ HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202025 <-SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121649 <-ASUS HD7870 Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB

I was doing some research and people were suggesting that if you are going to ugprade your GPU you should absolutely have a 4gb one, though I have a simple 22" monitor that runs at 1680x1050 and I am satisified.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Best,
Erik

There are a few things to consider:

1. Do you plan on raising the resolution of your monitor.

If so, and you plan to get an upgraded one to be "more modern" i.e. 1920 x 1080, 1440p, 1600p then you will 100% want more memory in your GPU for 1440p and 1600p. If you plan to stay at 1080p then 2GB should be fine.

2. I am not much a fan of AMD compared to Intel, however there R series is definitely really good. I would do as follows:
So GPU options
:
AMD: Radeon Gold award comes with 3 free games, and you can get RAMDisk ( get it for $9 bucks instead of $19.)
check:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7457/the-radeon-r9-290x-review/11

290X fall into $$550 series which equates to a GTX 780 (costs $$729) OUT OF BUDGET
290 series for $399 falls into the GTX 770 series Out of Budget
280X is $300 to $200 and is like a GTX 760 If you can squeeze it

So knowing your budget @ $200, you would most likely want the 270X or 7870. Maybe someone can chime in since on the benchmarks the 7870 and 270X are about even.

The difference you are probably asking since the 7000 series comes with 3 free games and the R9 series comes with only BF4
the MSI 280x is basically a 7970 with tweaks and higher clocks and slightly faster. So if you find a MUCH cheaper 7970 and want the 3 free games (not BF4 get that)

I am really not the right person to ask since I am an Nvidia fan. Anyone here able to help out Mayberg with the right option? I think he would want more than 2GB but if he can snag the
ASUS HD7870-DC2-2GD5-V2 Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition for $139 or
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7870 GH for 129

I do not think there is a better option since the 270X is $100 more look:

1. GABYTE GV-R927XOC-2GD Radeon R9 270X 2GB 256-bit $199.99

2. ASUS R9270X-DC2T-2GD5 Radeon R9 270X209.99

3. PowerColor AXR9 280X 3GBD5-DHE Radeon R9 280X 3GB is 299.99

So I would lean to the 280 / 290 however with your budget the 7870 should be like the 270X in terms of performance.

Thoughts everyone?

If your going to be staying at that resolution a 2gb card should be fine. Heck even at 1080p. I have 2gb Gtx 670 and i Play bf4 on Ultra settings at 1080 and id say i avg 45-50 fps. However if you plan on ever going to 1440p more vram would be a wise choice. You should be happy with a 270x at 1080p 0r lower tho. Or im looking to get rid of my 670 if your interested? Just upgraded to 1440p monitor myself thumb.gif

That would work great for you at your current resolution. Seems like a good deal to me. Heres some bf4 bench marks. You would easily be able to run it on ultra. http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/battlefield_4_vga_graphics_performance_benchmark,7.html
