New Server Advice

Thread Starter
I currently have an ancient all-in-one Hitachi computer running as a Debian server. Needless to say, it's not very powerful and very outdated. I'm wanting to build a small server that can run PLEX Media Server (and other things but PMS is most resource intensive) . I currently have a 470 graphic card and Antec 650 PSU for sale that I might keep for this. All I would need is a mobo, cpu, ram, and a case (want a very small case) .

Prefer something like an i5 or higher because pms requires a lot cpu power.

Any advice on what parts I should get (figured this would be the best time with all the deals going on).

Buy a high quality laptop like the Razer Blade or desktop like the Dell Optilex. It'll be easier than building a computer to run a simple Plex Media Server. Just make sure you have all of the right connections.
For the price of the useless Razer Blade I could build 30 servers that run Plex.

@OP, here's a spec that will suit Plex (I didn't choose a case because that's for you to decide):

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2bW4H

Don't bother with the 470 GPU (sell that). Your Antec PSU should be fine.

For the record, I run a Plex server inside a virtual machine on top of Hyper-V 2012 R2 with a single core (host CPU is a Xeon E3-1230 V3) and it runs just fine.

Thank you both (repped).

@sheppkvn, as tompsonn stated, that would cost way too much and would probably be unnecessary. I'll be using the server for a lot more than just PMS, but PMS is just most resource intensive.

@ tompsonn, looks awesome! Why don't you think I should keep the 470? Also, I think I could do without the SSD, no? I'll be using a 2TB drive for it to store everything I have. Also, what's the wired network adapter for if the mobo has ethernet? Really hoping one of those components goes for sale on Monday biggrin.gif How much do you think I could save if I went the AMD routes (with same specs)?

I also have the option of upgrading the rig in my sig and just transferring those parts to the server.

There is no need to use the 470 over the Intel graphics for a server. Its just going to chew power you don't need. And my god that Intel server network adapter is CHEAP, you'd be silly not to get it at that price!! Yes you could do without the SSD but it would be great to transcode to. You could also transcode to a RAM disk though.

@ Pontiac, many thanks. I was considering amd for price but then just found this on SD and bit:http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/107856/newegg---msi-z77a-g45-lga-1155-hdmi-sata-6gbs-usb-3.0-atx-intel-motherboard?utm_source=android_app&

What do you guys think? I was thinking of getting the Intel i620 processor to complement it? Would the combo be powerful enough to run PMS with 1080 quality?

@ tompsonn, excuse my ignorance, but what benefit would it add? I don't mind purchasing it as long as I needed it and will see better speeds.

Not sure what you mean by tranacoding on the ssd? Are you suggesting I get an ssd for transcoding and them have all the content on the 2tb drive? I'd that's the case, I'll just put the ssd in my sig on the server and buy a new (bigger) one for my rig. What do you think?

Board looks OK. I haven't heard of any Intel i620 CPU (there is a Pentium G620) though... Did you mean the i5 650?

Well, that Intel server adapter is a dual port - it runs for around $200 normally (!!) [in Australia anyway]. It will crap all over the motherboard ethernet - will prevent any possible issues you have from streaming to a lot of clients. I was more suggesting the SSD to install the operating system on and also use it for transcoding. If you want to run Plex, I'd recommend a separate transcode disk (either SSD, separate HDD, or transcode to a RAM disk) - it will handle more clients.

Thanks again tompsonn.

Sorry, I did mean the G620. It's on Amazon for about 43. Do you think it will be able handle plex with highest quality (I like watching high quality stuff, nothing cheap). If it won't give me the best output, I'd rather pay a little more and get better quality.

If that's the case, then that network card is very convincing! Okay how about I install Debian on my 64gb Samsung ssd and then use my 2tb for all the content. Will that work well?

If I'm not getting a graphics card, do you recommend any case? The smaller the better for me because it will be in a clothes closet.

Oh right you are not using Windows to run Plex? But yes that should be fine, Linux won't need the full 128GB SSD. I would not get the G620 for Plex, no.

You don't need a graphics card if you use my build - the Intel CPU has the integrated graphics.
