Can't get the right i7 950 Overclock

Hi, i've been trying to get the right overclock for my system and I can't seem to find the right voltages to keep my core temp down.

I'm using an i7 950 with an Asus Rampage 3 Formula, 12GB 1.65v Patriot 1600 Viper 2 Tri-Channel memory and a Thermaltake 850w PSU.

I've tried a bunch of different configurations but am unable to keep the core temps under 85 degrees Celsius. I use RealTemp to Monitor my core and HWMonitor for everything else.

I don't use any of ASUS ROG's Extreme Tweaker presets, I handle all my overclocking manually. I keep my BLCK at about 190-200, and seem to get the best results when keeping the Multiplier at 21. I'm also using a Zalman 2 bearing 120mm Heat Sink.

I've read most of the threads on this site regarding this subject but I still haven't had the success as the others with this.

The ambient temp in my room is about 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit and CPU will idle at about 43 Degrees Celsius. Full Load brings it to about 70 but after a couple hours it starts to hit its peak of the 100 degree celsius danger zone.

My current settings are:
BCLK: 192
MULTI: 21
vcore 1.3
qpi/vtt: 1.35
dram: 1.65v
LLC: 0% Load-Line
PLL: 1.80
IOH and ICH: 1.2

Anyone else have issues OCing this board manually? Any advice would be awesome as I can almost lock down a 24/7 @ 4.0/1600

What worked for me was to keep my ram speed below specs....Exp..I have 1600 ram. I would set the speed 1 step below. Also, don't forget to manually set your ram timings. Another thing is I only changed my BCLK to 191, Multi to 21, vcore to 1.25 dram to 1. 65. and everything on auto....I have i7 920 D0 at 4.0ghz at 1.25 volts. Good Luck.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

My RAM timings are currently 9 9 9 24. It's default but wasn't sure if I'd be able to pull better performance by tweaking them lower. I'll check into this.

Your ZALMAN CNPS9500 HSF is outdated. Replace it with something like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181010

Or anyone of:

http://www.newegg.com/Water-Liquid-Cooling/SubCategory/ID-575?Order=REVIEWS

That 1st link (CORSAIR Hydro Series H50) seems to be the most purchased. but using the 2nd link u might find a better deal on something; especially considering all these sales going on today and through the weekend.

ur temps should come way down.

Really? I thought my Zalman was the best or air cooling. I'm going to keep flexing my voltages until I get a stable temp before I go water cooled. If I go water cooled I'm going for higher than 4.0 smile.gif

The Zailman u have was 1st designed for the LGA775 platform. LGA1366/i7-950 requires a much better cooler. The closed water coolers are just as good as the best most expensive Air coolers. But they are very easy to use and are not a problem when it comes to needing a large case and maybe low rising RAM for many Air coolers for LGA1366.

Performance @3.85GHz through 4.1GHz+ is not large enough of a difference to be worth going beyond 4.0GHz on i7-950. Stick to least 3.85GHz and no more than 4.0GHz tops. The video card is wat matters most for gaming along with how well u tweak ur OS. And 4.0GHz is great because u can leave Throttling enabled np.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know this Zalman was a poor choice of air cool for my system. The ASUS ROG presets can give me an easy 3.8ghz OC but I know I can get better considering if it's automated it's mostly crap. Especially considering the preset drops the performance on my RAM considerably, which is more important in my opinion.
