Need help picking heatsink for R9 290 VRM - Page 13

Yes I did ues the pad delivered with the heatsink.

The pad gets compressed as you tighten the screws.

By the way, Gelid now sell a new heatsink dedicated to the R9 290(X). Better use it!

Bumping this to say how amazing the Gelid R9 VRM heatsinks are.

Mine were getting toasted without any cooling because i had an aftermarket cooler on it. I saw 94c+ only once before I decided to do something about it. Got these suckers and after running overclocked, max VRM temp I saw was around 60c. Amazing!

I run the Gelid 290/290x heatsink and from feppa spot at $9 inc shipping you cant go wrong..

I have to have a play about with things..but at the moment I am at 2011MHz / 1340 MHz.

Only seeing temps of 55 max on valley on the gpu and 50 odd on the vrm1.

Does anyone know, if this Gelid VRM heatsink will fit with a Prolimatech MK26 cooler and where to actually get those? They are on backorder everywhere, even on this website from netherlands. frown.gif

Since I stumbled upn this thread, and read through it (roughly) I fgured I would put in a post as well. Now I am well aware that this is for 290x and at this point the 290x is even considered an obsolete card, that is if you don't count the 39 and the 390x which is more or less a rebrand with more memory.

anyhow, this is for my current 7950 (on a 7970 PCB) and even though I did this a year ago I figured I would share it here since I havent seen any good sugestions for the small memory VRM cluster. For me I had the coice to either make something myself or to use thermal tape and tiny heatsinks.

so what I ended up doing was to take a regular ram heatsink and cut it to shape with my dremmel. Then I shaped a fitting "bracket" out of a scrap piece of aluminium I had laying around. This lead to a fairly efficient VRM cooler that currently holds my temps at about 30-40*c under load (I also have a tiny fan over them now). So take a look at the pictures if you are interested, if not then just ignore the post and move along smile.gif

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it mounted on the card, but I'll be redoing the cooling on it in a month or two so I could upload some more pictures then. I might also make a completely new heatsink out of a bigger piece of alu I have laying around somewhere wink.gif
