msi 7950 gt passive.i cut and modified her heatsink.and those 2 little things that hold it secure are just from a reference design 4890.or any other ati.the cross thing that holds the heatsinks on the core.o cut one of those.
its custom made.you cant find this thing.

Gotcha, thanks again. Have you noticed a good temp delta from using your solution vs no heatsink on the vrm strip?

of course.i never run without any vrm heatsink.
with this heatsink and overclocked with asus gpu tweak
core 1120
voltage 1337
mem 5400
power target +50%
and fan speed 70@% (2 akasha vipers 120mm running at 1340
i have at running valley benches and 3dmark 11 max 71 celsius on vrm 1 strip.
these are up until now my stable clocks without artifacting with very good temps and good voltage.

just out of curiosity, has anyone hacked up the stock cooler to use that for the vrm heat sink???

Ok good to know, I'm modding my cards this weekend, so this helps in deciding what I should use as far as heatsinks and performance of the components. Is that your max overclock or your 24/7 stable ?

Yeah, this thread here is what I believe you are referring to. http://www.overclock.net/t/1453555/quick-guide-for-the-disassembly-and-re-use-of-amd-290-reference-cooler-as-vrm-ram-heatsink

^well this is my max safe 24/7 overclock as far as it goes for power.maybe my memory goes up a bit more,i will try and see.
if i give more power maybe i will go up but i do not need this now cause when i give 1.41volts from gpu tweak my max is 1180 benching with artifacts.
i use aftermarket cooling btw.you should have seen it on the pics.also my card is not a good clocker.with stock volts i can bench with no artifacts at 1070-1250.

Ok as far as vrm heatsinks are concerned I have three compounds. Arctic alumina ic diamond and arctic silver 5. Which would work theoretically the best for contact between the heatsink and vrms? Should I be worried about the heatsink touching the pcb and shorting out the whole card?

I'm planning to test this out as well and will be using a non-electrically conductive TIM. I'm just worried about the issue of shorting out the VRMs if the heatsink is directly touching the surface of it..

Has anyone who has tried using the stock lower part of the heatsink for vrm cooling gotten any temps to report?

or as anyone gotten themselves one of those thermalright or zalman coolers yet?

I have installed thermalright vrm-r5 on my radeon r9 290. The bottom of this radiator need to be milled or sawed. Coils and capacitors on graphic card are too high. I'm using it with 80x80 fan 800rpm and the temperatures of VRM1 aren't higher than 80C (tested in crysis 3). My clocks are 1215/1500/+100/+50% (core/mem/voltage/power). I marked on the picture what you need to do to fit it on radeon r9 290. For installation you have to use a clamp.on one side (closer to mainboard). I'm cooling my GPU with EK VGA supremacy.
