PC is ALREADY slowing down ??

Hi all,

As you can see from my sig, I invested a lot of money and time into building my rig barely a few months ago (in May).

In the last 2 weeks I've noticed the following problems:

- My main storage hard drive (1TB Western Digital Blue) makes a whining noise when I try to browse files on it, after a fresh start on my PC, or when I come back to the PC after a while. The noise is a bit like when you used to rewind a VCR.

I get the impression that the HD is on some kind of energy saving mode? Because I can hear it sometimes stop making this noise, when my PC is idle, as if it's taking a break until I need to use it again.

-Second problem: when I turn on my PC I have to wait about 2-5 seconds for my mouse to actually start working. How can this be? The drivers are installed on the C:\ drive, on the SSD, so what's the wait for? I even tried plugging in the wireless receiver in another port, but same problem.

Your help would be greatly appreciated... Thank you!

-Rich

I'm just gonna throw out some suggestions so you have some sort of reply to go with.. Stupid question but I have to ask.. Are all the drivers up to date? have you tried other revisions of the drivers?
I have the same HDD in mine. When I was going thru the many reviews before getting it, that was one of the problems many seemed to complain out. Loud weird noises coming from it then it died.. Have you done a hard drive health check? I'm not overly familiar with the different programs but I know WD has one somewhere on their website.
I know it's not much but hope that helps at least a little! Best of luck

Mechanical hard drives are suppose to make little noises, unless it's making clicking or other loud noises there's probably nothing wrong with it.

Sometimes you might hear the hard drive more as it's kicking in when you first start the system or after you wake it from idle or sleep. You can prevent your hard drive from sleeping by disabling the timer in Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced Power Options > Hard Disk

Thanks for the suggestions. Problem is I can't really update my mouse drivers. There's only a gaming app from Logitech that you can install, but I have it anyway.

I'll try and do a HD health check, would be a good idea I guess.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went in here and changed the turn-off time for the HD from 20 minutes to 0 (basically: never). I'm wondering though WHICH hard disk it applied the setting to ^^ If it's the SSD, I doubt it turns off since Windows is on it. Must be the HDD then, right?

I went in here : Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (next to "High Performance". --> Change advanced power settings --> Hard Disk

im guessing its for every drive, but you'll find out soon as you continue to use your system. The SSD probably wont benefit from it however.
