Having trouble with 7800gtx

Thread Starter
hey there everyone,

just received a gainward 7800gtx 256m i won on ebay (used) and was happily tryin to plug it in and enjoy the major upgrade from my x800, when it struck me like a bolt... the computer wont start.

i plugged the pci-e card in the right mobo slot, connected the psu graphics card cable to it and the pc doesn't run...

but, wierd as it may appear, when i unplugged the pci-e cable of the psu from the card the computer started, having no image on the screen, though...

bottom of the line: could this card be up for a RMA or is it the psu i should be worrying about?

thanks in advance.

well, it doesn't appear to be a driver issue, so long as the computer should at least start even without a graphics card... which unfortunately isn't the case.

When you plugged in the 7800GTX w/o the power cord, did your card make a high pitched sound? I remember on my old 7800 GS OC AGP, when you don't plug in the power, the card will scream at you.(not sure if the 7800 GTX does this) Plug in your old x800. if everything boots, and there's an image on the screen, plug in the 7800 GTX (might want a OCZ PSU like the gameXtreme 600W or 700 to be future proof) and see if it works, try with the power cable in and out.

the gtx didn't make any noise...
with the power cord connected the computer simply does not start.
if i remove the cord it'll start but have no signal on screen.
my x800 works fine, but it doesn't need the 6pin power cord to supply the extra amps.
my concern is wether i should return the card to its original owner and ask for a refund, or could the problem be related to the dedicated power cord in my psu.

What are the specs of your powersupply? I've never heard of bequiet PSU. I.E. what are the amps on the 12v+ rail etc.

hum... doesn't surprise me much that you've never heard about this brand, as it's german and probably are available only in europe, or so...
it has 31amp in the 12v rail... and will top the 38amp in peak. i suppose they should be more than enough...

btw, http://www.be-quiet.net/be-quiet.net/
my psu is not listed there cause its a bit old... a year or so...

Its probably a dead card, I've had the same thing happen in the shop with machines and dead 6600GT's. The pcs won't power on until you yank the card. Then everything works normally.

Dead card, I remember buildin a system for a friend using a new BFG 7900 GT. It boots and displays fine w/o the power cord, but the nVidia driver panel told you that the card needs more power. Return and get a refund, I didn't know they made GTXs with 256 mb.
