you could try a slim, slot-load drive and this Silverstone thingy that could be powdercoated to match

You gotta keep in mind the intended target - a young person, could be persuaded ... but the average pc user - dude ! where's my rom ?!

I dunno, I'm out of touch with the average young pc user these days. I don't think its so hard to go rom-less with today's streaming and all.

The only reason I can think of to use a rom these days is to rip. Pure and simple. Everything else is download/upload/stream and usb stick.

Some pictures from today, haven't gotten any of the sleeving that came in just yet,

Should I paint the PCI brackets blue? Or just paint the graphics card bracket white?

I know... there's just no real need for them jealoussmiley.gif

Actually, I use mine almost daily for something - but I'm far from the 'average' user. I admit to using mine more at work but I do also use my home drive pretty heavily ripping audio/video media to the home server (I don't see any reason to use the media for anything other than nearline archival - but my optical drives are essential for me).

If I'm not burning backups for clients to them (much cheaper than handing off flash-drives - and read-only means no easy modification after the fact), then I'm making MP3 CDs for my car, etc....

That being said... I don't see the need to have one actually in the computer - as I agree it wastes valuable space. I'd say just get one of these (or any model really - the Asus ones are really slick looking, but you pay for that) and paint (or vinyl wrap) the outside to match the build - maybe even sleeve the USB cable if you wanted to make it perfect. biggrin.gif

That way they have it if they want it, the cost is only slightly higher than an internal drive, and you keep all of the flexibility and space for loop and essentials. thumb.gif

Don't you have to buy some expensive software to play blu rays on pc? External isn't a bad idea actually. It just seems weird since there's so much room in the case!

I got my 1st white xspc ax360. I have to say I'm disappointed with the shade of white they used. It's more of a cream white, and it looks out of place next to the pure white case and fittings. Thankfully, the semi gloss white I used on the PSU is an excellent match to the powdercoat on the case, so I think I'll just repaint it with that.

Also, the blue sleeving from Lutro0 is too light, I think I'm going to have to buy some navy.

Not really all that expensive - although I never play the bluray directly... I always use MakeMKV (free while in beta) to rip the main title only to an .mkv and then I just play that. Saves all the hassle of the decoder software as all you need is a codec which handles MKV (LAV splitter for example). The only reason I picked that drive is that the difference between a BD writer/player and one that just does DVD/CD is between $20-30 so why not have the capacity if it's desireable. Also if you want to backup something significant - 8GB for DL DVD is often inadequate - but a 25GB BD-R is usually plenty! biggrin.gif

For live-play of bluray media you would need something like Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater ($50 right now) on the high-end, commercial side - but there are freeware/shareware alternatives like VLC (supported only in beta and only for partially encrypted BD's - but free) or Leawo Bluray Player which is free initially and $40 for permanent use.

Even if it's just something I'm going to watch once however (like a rental) I'd rather rip it first and delete it after viewing, than have to watch the previews and be locked out of the menu... biggrin.gif

You could always dye it darker... CPAChris's BBBB build uses dyed sleeving and he has a comprehensive tutorial... definitely not the fastest or most cost-effective method, but one which allows exactly the color you desire provided you are diligent in documenting the method to produce the desired effect so that you can replicate it exactly on the final batch.

Man I really appreciate your input! You are much more knowledgeable than me on this subject obviously smile.gif

+ Rep to you my friend

I have an email in to Lutro0 to see if he does exchanges. Otherwise I'll probably just buy some navy (what's another $13 dad? blushsmiley.gif) and maybe use the other blue in my mitx rebuild.

LOL Thanks... I'm a bit of a media hoarder or maybe just whore. tongue.gif I'm sure Lutro0 will be amicable to an exchange, although I'm not positive on that possibility (but he's such a nice guy that I don't see him being very inflexible if it's a reasonable request). However, as I'm sure you are well aware... you can never actually have enough sleeving materials on hand. It's like fittings in that sense - you may have a box full of them... but when it comes time to build - you'll still be missing that one adapter.

In your case that's much less likely since you're bending hardlines - which if for no other reason than that is looking like the most cost-effective approach (unless you're someone like me that already dumped a crapload of cash on compression fittings). rolleyes.gif

I know exactly what you mean about missing 1 of something (also about spending a bunch on compressions)

Lol so the heating in my house isn't working for some reason... it's like 55 F in here and the GPUs on my system are idling at 16 C lmao
