Help with live transcoding from Ubuntu server.

Hi Guys/Girls

I have a Ubuntu web server set up in my lan that displays 1 page and has a list of all my available video files, they are embedded in an html5 page using the built-in video player. This has worked out well for me because just about any device will play .mp4 videos in this way.

Unfortunately alot of my videos are not .mp4 and I would like to transcode them on the fly (When someone requests the video it transcodes it in real time) is this possible in linux? I have searched the web but have not has any luck finding what I need.

Yea I haven't used it so I wasn't sure if that is what you were looking for. With some googling I came over this thread, maybe it will be some help to you. I currently am ripping my DVD collection to .avi so I haven't tried live transcoding yet, but I remember reading about it, so it has to be possible. Sorry I can't be more helpful but check this out.

Subsonic / Madsonic / Supersonic. They're all forks of Subsonic and will do exactly what you're after and more.

Plex has a web interface which allows you to play content and transcodes it to given quality based on bandwidth settings, it uses a flash player instead of html5 however. I've been using this for quite some time and it works very well both locally and remotely.
