Well i probably should not mention it but when I switched from an Intel S478 rig to my AMD rig in sig which is about the biggest change that you could do lol

I phoned up M$ and told them my HDD had died and had to reinstall the OS and they gave me a new key straight away.

I only use the OS on one system tho,

I feel that what defines a computer is two things. Motherboard + CPU. If either of these change it should be considered to be a new computer. Adding memory to a computer doesn't require re-activation. Changing out the memory does (Ex. 133Mhz to 400Mhz) With XP and Vista the rule is it shouldn't run on more than one computer at any one time.

So therefore since you changed out the motherboard and CPU and everything else but the original copy of XP you installed isn't being used, you are then completely 100% legal MjrTom.

Now had you kept your old machine and installed a second copy of XP on the new machine while the first was still active that would be a legal no-no.

This is the dumbest article I have ever read. The enquirer is putting out some real crap these days. Mute point as XP and Vista have almost the same EULA.
It will be the same as it was 5 years ago retard.

Note: inquirer, not enquirer. Enquirer is celebrities, aliens, and general BS, inquirer is london based computer hardware. They usually have some interesting stuff there (they had the first dell batteries catching fire story.)

I certainly won't be buying a new OS every time I swap a board. As long as the OS is only on one machine I say your good.

They should make it per household if you ask me. Like the 1 OS per machine rule ever stopped most of you though. lol

Dang, what did you guys do, actually fill out the activation form?

Had 2 MS warnings about hardware changes (ironically from Nero and Intervideo), but the re-activation was done via the internet. A lot less hassle than trying to install some other software (especially 3D programs).

If you've already activated and you put in a new mobo, XP will stop you and say you have to call (you won't be able to log in).
