Brand new to OC'ing (FX-6100 + M5A88-M)

Thread Starter
I have just installed my very first non-stock CPU cooler (H60) and I am hoping to OC. I am far from the computer noob, I know all my parts and have built many computers, but never have OC'd for the fear of breaking something. I have a few issues/problems I'm not too sure about when it comes to OC'ing so here's a little about my situation.

According to one of my friends, my CPU heat sensor could be broken. It is reading just under 10 C while idle or doing light browsing, and in the low 20's C when playing Battlefield 4. All of my mobo settings related to GPU/CPU/RAM should be at stock. I've been using the program called CoreTemp and OpenHardwareMonitor and they are getting the same readings. The last time I checked my CPU temperature in the BIOS it said it was at 30 C.

My other problem is, where do I start. I've seen a few videos, read up a little, but I would really like some direction from some real pros. And I'm sorry to say but I need straight forward directions because I am not really sure how to control the OC. I know where everything is in the BIOS, I just do not understand nearly all of the different fields and options in it. I'm not looking to maximize my CPU to 100% of its potential. I know it can hit up to 4GHZ but I'd be happy with 3.8GHZ.

Also, running a CX600 power supply and 6850 (hoping to get a 7870 or 670 this holiday).

Thanks for reading smile.gif

Are the temperature readings I'm getting accurate?

Also, is it pretty much standard to update the BIOS to the latest for all OC'ers?
