Very small HTPC quad core build (with photos)

Hi all
I´ve been toying with the idea of a small HTPC for a while. It was definitely a challenge fitting everything in such a small space. (I have goalkeeper type hands) . A couple cuts and curses later, it all came together .
I borrowed the first 2 photos , easy to tell as mine are sad.
Parts :
MB:- GIGABYTE F2A88XN wifi
CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 70

case; Akasa Crypto mini-ITX

Very nice case, well constructed, good ventilation and a thin mat on the bottom to stop possible arcing.
This thing is tiny , I kept looking at it thinking I´d bitten off more than I can chew.

the rest
APU; A8 6500T 2.1 - 3.1 Ghz, HD 8550D 45W quad core
Ram: Kingston Hyper-X blue 1600
Samsung 830 64g SSD
Cooler ; Scythe Kozuti
The Alpenföhn Silvretta was my first choice but it just wasn´t available here.
Here´s the cooler before I got to it, that hacksaw in the back would come into play later on.

The little fan also had me worried about noise, I was thinking about a push pull setup.
useing a 120 x 12 mm slipstream fan from my big Shuriken that I had laying around.

After a quick mock up, it turned out that the cooler was about 5mm too tall.
I didn´t want to lose the 120mm fan so I decided to crush the the cooler down slightly. I took the bottom fan out, laid the cooler on the fins, on a book.
Pressing down with my hands was enough, as the copper heat pipes are soft and pretty malleable. I then had to tap the pipes with a hammer slightly to get them into position for the retention brackets.
The next problem was the fins were now hitting the top of the RAM Doh
I hack sawed the fins off, right down the side of the heat pipe careful as not to cut into it.

underneath cut

Top fins cut, and cooler sqaushed down 5mm,. bolted onto the backplate with a mm between the fins and the ram.

The wiring was tricky and had to be done with the MB out of the case.
I ended up using the Kozuti fan to cool the PSU board as the stock 50mm was a squealer.
Threw in the SSD

I think if I squash that Cooler down a bit more I can fit the DVD drive in there. lol

I´ts been running for a few hours now at about 10c above ambient and it is silent. I have a few more tests to do and some bios tuning, but so far I´m very happy, it´s a nice upgrade from the E350 we´ve been using .

Thanks, the cooler took some work.
I´m thinking of throwing the low voltage ballistic tracers in there this week , but that will take a slight rearrange of the fan as they are a little taller than those Hyper.X.

I've been thinking about an HTPC and have been leaning more towards a 5000 (15W)/5200 (25W) Kabini - if the desktop motherboards ever become available - but your setup looks very tempting indeed... And at max 45W it still just sips power.

What's the fresh boot time on that thing? And what sort of power down mode do you use (off / hibernate / standy / ...)?

Don't mind if I steal a few ideas from this topic *yoink* smile.gif

It does sip power , at full load it´s rebooting , I think I´m on the limit of this cheap looking 60w brick. I found a nice 100w brick at a local retailer which I will be picking up next week, Hopefully then I´ll be able to see what this thing can do.
Yes the Kabini needs to release now as there are,nt even any e350s around here to fill the low power HTPC gap.
I had to get an e350 from Germany last week for a client.
Boot time is app 15 sec , shutdown is about 5sec ,it´s a very snappy little thing.
I sometimes leave it on standby , but most of the time power it down.

Very, very cool. When I played around with some pico ITX power supplies I noticed the 45W and 60W versions were 'normal' but the 95W version was slightly bigger (generally not important) and came with a little fan. Undesirable for an HTPC build, so be on the lookout for that.

On the other hand I wonder what on an HTPC would make it go full load and if that's really necessary. Perhaps undervolting would be a good solution?

Great build. This is the kind of thing people miss when arguing over AMD's APU lineup. This is exactly how people should be using APU's in decently powered HTPC boxes that dont take up the whole room and can still play a game or two thumb.gif

id imagine the idle on that is around 16 - 18w ?
