sold sli 760 4gb and got sli 770 2gb, good move, bad move, or wobt matter?

Thread Starter
Ok, so i have an fx 8350 and 16gb of 1600mhz system ram sitting on a asus sabertooth 990fxa rev 2.0 and a corsair tx850 psu. I sold my 760 sc 4gb cards and went with the reference 770's with 2 gb. I personally like the reference design, and temps prove that it was the right move in that aspect. But, was swapping a less power 4gb sli setup for a more powerful 2gb sli setup a stupid move? Ill be gaming on a 46in flat screen at 1080p btw. All input welcome and appreciated smile.gif

At 1080p, not really but TBH you should have gotten 2x 290.
290s were definitely not the answer if he was already having a heat issue. As for the 2 gb vs 4 gb issue, im not sure when that will become a problem but im having no issues gaming in surround on 2gb VRAM cards. I dont think you will be disappointed.

Your gaming at 1080p...760 SLI handles that with ease (so you already know 770 SLI does the same). Based on site reviews, both reference SLI setups require 700w / 800w psu's & basically generate the same amount of heat (maybe 2 to 3 degrees different in favor of the 770 SLI). Basically, you paid more to get an average of 20% to 25% more performance minus 2Gb. Now was it a good move? If you plan to stay at 1080p, I will say it was a decent move but not the most logical move cuz you went from 4Gb to 2Gb but that's my opinion upsidedwnsmiley.gif. However, 2Gb is more enough to handle gaming at highest graphic settings at 1080p (site reviews back this up). If you're into mods, the extra 2Gb can come in handy but if you're not into them, you can honestly say to yourself it was a good move. Your question is very subjective & basically can or will generate many opinions but at the end of the day, if having 770 2Gb SLI makes you happier than having 760 4Gb SLI, then our thoughts & opinions should not make you feel like you made a "stupid" decision. The most positive result from this move is that you can guarantee yourself that your gaming experience will always be excellent (60fps or higher) at 1080p thumb.gif ...so enjoy what you have my friend biggrin.gif

The 770s add considerably more performance. As for how good of a deal it was, depending on what he got for the 760s and the recent price drop on 770s, it could of been a good deal i guess. Your right in that the 760s will handle the job in 1080 but the more powerful gpu will help with microstutter in sli if that was an issue. I dont think he'll "see" much of a difference either way at 1080.

Ill say i notice a HUGE increase in stability in BF4 at max settings (even with the resolution scale tuned to 130%). No stuttering at all, althoufh mem usage is at the 2gb mark consistantly (2.1gb with the 760's). These are the "best buy" brand (nvidia) 770s, and they are newly released, and i couldnt see why nvidia would release a "new" gpu with 2gb if it was soon not going to ve enough I cant go to the red/amd team for gpu's. ive tried several different amd cards all with the same result; black screen, cannot recognize didplay adapter. This is after all previous drivers removed abd even once on a fresh new build. No amd left a very bad taste in my mouth. Never had a problem with nvidia, even when amd drivers were installed smile.gif.

Very true, depending on the game that is played...That's why I had said average performance difference with an understanding of being higher wink.gif
Remember we can not forget that besides the average FPS, there are minimum & maximum FPS that will be experience when playing some games. The perfect gaming performance bar is set at a consistent average of 60FPS but the problem is that even at an average of 60fps, there will frame rate drops below that mark cuz there are always highs & lows while gaming (Crysis, Metro, & other similar heavy graphical intense games). The faster (or higher) the average FPS, the higher the minimum FPS will be. So the goal for near perfect / or perfect gaming is to have your minimum FPS get as close as possible to 60FPS or at least to a comfortable minimum FPS (40 to 45) so the transition from the average FPS to minimum FPS during gameplay is smoother. This matter to some gamers while others gamers don't care.
