What is this residue?

Thread Starter

It mainly forms directly at the waterline. I have some membrane plugs installed so there's a little bit of water evaporating over time and I refilled the res lately. This is maybe two months worth of residue. There is also some white'ish residue on the inside of the tubing so I can't say if it's some sort of plasticizer, the distilled is bad or something else.
I pulled a paper towel through one of the tubes once before refilling last time and there was some very faint green'ish stuff on the towel as well. Last time there was nickel, copper and silver in the loop, this time it's only nickel, copper and mayhems XT1.

If you haven't already, I would check the Mayhem's forum. Obviously, there is something going on with your loop and needs immediate attention.. Yes it suck, but I think you know its time to break down your loop and do some more investigating before it gets out of control. I have had my loop since April using Advance LRT tubing w/ Mayhem's Pastel White. Nickel Plexi Blocks and Alphacool Rads...and all is good. Good Luck

Are you using tap water to dilute the concentrate?

There's no tap water in the loop, only regular cheap distilled that comes in 5L canisters and, on the last refill, 5% XT1. Before, there was distilled + silver killcoil and the residue looked similar. I don't think the XT1 is causing this but what else could it be?

I think I've been having this kind of residue since day 1 and didn't give it too much thought, yet it looks bad because it keeps messing up the looks of my res. Initially there was the copper CPU block and the copper rad. Months later the nickel GPU block was added. A while later I heard nickel and silver can cause issues so I removed the silver coil and added XT-1.
Over the months I've drained and refilled the loop several times, everytime with fresh distilled and as far as I remember, there was always this kind of residue.

The only thing that comes to mind is plasticizer leeching. I've just found this massive post and the white coating does look familiar. So far there was no gunk in the blocks whenever I opened them and there certainly were no white floaty bits though, which may be a good thing.

The whole rig will be disassembled in the next days or weeks anyway for my ongoing build so I might as well try out various things. The blocks and the rad will be cleaned with vinegar anyway but I'm reluctant about the box of Masterkleer tubing sitting here. There are little options for orange tubing though. I could get hold of XSPC orange and that's about it.

Maybe it could be that plasticizer stuff.

Ya, I agree...Masterkleer tubing. I would stay away from....Primochill Advance LRT....Clear tubing and use Mayhem's pastel to get your orange color....Good Luck.

Really honestly I'm not sure what to believe about Masterkleer (or Tygon or Primochill etc. etc.)
In one test people have issues with one, in another test with the other.

Jeez someone explain bending copper tubes to me... wink.gif

I intend to use Primochill Red tubing in my first liquid cooling rig, "The Hawaiian Heat Wave" (build log in sig). I hope not to suffer your circumstances as I to will be using distilled water purchased from Shoppers Drug Mart. I will first rinse everything I will be using in the water loop with distilled water and pay specific attention to the radiators by filling those with warm distilled water and shacking all factory particles and sediments from the inside of the radiators. I will not be using any dies. I will also be adding some Feser Base Biocide & Corrosion Blocker.

Did you take the same precautions?

Sort of, yes. I didn't rinse the rad at first but I will do so this time with some vinegar, just to be on the safe side. There were some tiny black bits clogging up in the cpu block at first but nothing to worry about.

As far as I was told, the most important bits are
don't mix metals too far apart on the galvanic corrosion chart
don't use tap water
use some biocide

For testing the rig a few days I wouldn't waste biocide but add it when I'm sure I don't need to drain the loop again.
