I used to study multimedia design at university before I started studying psychology. I never bothered trying to get a portable device for creative applications, simply because they never had enough grunt or battery life to really get anything system-intensive done.
I had a cheap laptop for taking notes in class, and used a high-end desktop PC for photoshop/illustrator/premier/3DSMax in my college room. Depending on your university/college, you may even have access to high-end desktop PCs with i7 Extremes and Quadro's in them
Before you try to find a device like the one you're looking for, I'd get in contact with your College and find out what sort of hardware they give you access to, and what sort of hardware they expect you to need for the courses you undertake. You might be able to save yourself a truckload of money (especially if your first year classes are very 'introductory' in nature)
