Want your opinions on Antec EA-550W Platinum's nosie level and how it would fare running dual GTX 660Ti

Hi,

I am looking into upgrading my PSU as my Corsair TX650M started making coil noises not too long ago.
I was looking at the Corsair AX1200i as the 760 or 860 models aren't locally available and because I don't want to order and have a unit shipped to me across the globe DOA.

I'm currently running Intel an i5 3570k with a single GTX 660Ti and a pair of low voltage Kingston ram. The system would idle around 100ish Watts and move on to 180-200 under load though I'm not sure how much it actually pulls for instance under gaming sessions of 1080p high-ultra settings.

For a third of the AX1200i's price I could buy the Antec EA-550W Platinum which fares with my current config out of the box. Then I could use the remaining to spend on an extra 660Ti (I know it's 2013 and GTX 780 is the new black but budget wise and out of my love for Galaxy 660Ti. Its' fans are so quiet and pleasant).

My 2 questions are:

1. If you've got the chance to work with Antec's EA-550W Platinum. How loud is the fan idle and under load? Everyone says noise is very subjective so please try to use something else as a reference for comparison.

2. Will 550W be sufficient to power dual 660Ti? Does running SLI with one GPU powered through PCI-e cables and the other through PCI-e molex adapters affect performance or stability?

I'm sorry for the long post. All inputs are much appreciated.

Voltage regulation is not great on the Antec Earthwatts Platinum

But why do you that massive AX1200i ripoff

For 100$ less you can get the EVGA SuperNova G2 1300 watts

You even get 100 watts more

Makes no sense to buy the AX1200i compared

What do you need to power since you want the AX1200i?

Last no i would not try GTX 660 TI on a 550 watts 650 could do it but not sure 550 could

Because I'm opting for silence and the AX1200i wins the community choice award for best silent psu, which i find ridiculous because i don't see any average consumers really needing this much output. But then again if you judge the AX1200i purely by its ability to shell out 500W of Platinum efficiency at 0-rpm mode in a well ventilated case, it suddenly is king.

It's a shame you can't SLI 660ti at 550W. Anybody has success story with this config?

A lot of high-powered quality PSUs don't run the fan till 50% load. Not just the AX1200i.

Have a look here for other options in the 750-850w range (could easily power two heavily OC'ed 660Ti or even stock 780s) :

And this is a better place for PSU reviews:

What thats total BS that the AX1200i is the only silent PSU you can buy

You got tons of other options

Like

Be Quiet Dark Power Pro P10
HighPower Astro PT
EVGA SuperNova P2 (only 1000 watts so far)
Fractal Design Newton R3

Those are only random picks that all have quiet fans or even semi fanless modes

There are lots more like some of the 100% fanless models you can find

FSP Enermax and Super Flower has some fanless models

Thanks for the list guys,

I really like beQuiet since the beginning but i did mention that these aren't my options considering local supply availability. I don't live in neither Europe or the states, that's why it's even harder to get these PSUs; plus the risk of having to RMA a DOA or faulty unit. The costs of shipping alone would easily out-cost the PSU itself.

I'll do a lil digging and see how my luck turns up. Thanks again eXXon and Shilka thumb.gif

I'm originally from Ishikawa, now I'm stuck and constantly moving around the SEA region due to work purposes.
How's your Europe prices for the BeQuiet Dark Pro 650 or 750?

I feel people get ripped off with these units from New Egg and especially Amazon prices.

They do as Be Quiet is not as overpriced here in the EU
