4:3 stretched on 16:9 monitor?

Hi,

so here's my problem: right now I'm playing a FPS game that benefits from using a 4:3 ratio (because thats the only ratio that uses YFoV), but I have a 16:9 monitor.
So my question is how bad it is to tretch a 4:3 resulution to fit a 16:9 monitor (from a gamers perspective)?
In case that matters, my GPU has a "GPU-Scaling" option, so the scaling doesn't have to be done by the monitor.
Or would it be a smarter idea to use a 4:3 resolution but not stretch it and have black bars on both sides?

Personally I would just play with the black sides. I hate having a game look stretched.
