It'll be interesting to see if Apple actually puts out a 4096x3072 iPad as is rumored.
Of course, in the context of this thread, Displayport wouldn't cover that resolution at 120hz so I would rather use whatever aspect ratio is available at the higher refresh rate.
That would be certainly interesting development. That would be ~525 dpi and would become "retina" at ~18 cm. For 15x20 cm screen viewing distance of ~18 cm is pretty damn close.
Current ipad screens use eDP 1.1a, though, so it would not be sure that they would go with eDP 1.3 with their "next" ipad. Nice thing with eDP is ofc that it can take a DP signal straight from DP output of your GFX card - all you would need is something to drive the backlight (and the 51 pin ribbon cable they use is damn small so preferably some PCB to make the DP cable to meet that ribbon cable with proper interface).
That is 3x 9.7'' 2048x1536 screens in 3x1 portrait setup
This "theoretical" new ipad screen would be probably a bit too high ppi for that kind of stuff though. Even at 265 ppi the usage can be somewhat situational (for reference, this is approx 20'' array with resolution of 4608x2048), viewing distance approx 30 cm..
