Well my AMD X4 955 has finally tanked, so I have decided to take some time and do a few upgrades. It's the middle of football season, so I decided to go with a football theme. Machine is primarily used for work, VMware, backing up other PCs, and sometimes used for gaming when friends or family visit.

Current Equipment:
Cooler Master CM 690 case
Amd X4 955 Black
GIGABYTE GA-770TA-UD3 AM3
Corsair H40 cooler
16G Gskill Sniper 1866 memory

New Parts:
NZXTSwitch 810
AMD FX-8350
ASROCK Extreme 9 990FX
MSI GTX 660 replacing - Nvidia GT 9500 - formerly GTX 570 which now belongs to the wife. thumb.gif
Corsair AX860 replacing - Ultra X4 750w

Cooling:
CPU: XSPC Raystorm AMD
GPU: EK GeForce 660 GTX VGA
Radiator: XSPC EX360 & XSPC EX240 (sides painted red or maybe white)
Fittings: Monsoon white
Reservoir: XSPC Dual 5.25" Bay Reservoir
XSPC Dual 5.35 Bay Cover - White
Pump: XSPC D5

Here's the plan...

  1. Remove and Paint the motherboard tray and back panel red
  2. Paint sliding top cover red
  3. Paint the PCI covers white
  4. Paint my current power supply red and white. I have a Ultra X4 750w v1 so I figure paint it and if it breaks... upgrade. Not planning SLI in this rig, and have never had problems with it so figure it will be good to practice on.
  5. Custom power and pci cables.
  6. Paint and sleeve NZXT case fans
  7. Sleeve as many cables as I can
  8. Custom stripes on outside of case
  9. Mount a few modified nfl team items
  10. Modify quick release and HD cage handles

I have never ripped a case apart or really painted anything but house walls, so this should be a good learning experience. Hopefully, with less learning and more experience. smile.gif Now to start ripping things apart. I will try go get some pics out tomorrow.

Used some tape before dismantling the case last night to figure out if the stripes were going to work with the items I want to mount on the case. I think it is going to work pretty well. Here is a pic of the basic concept. The lines don't match because I wasn't taping for paint wink.gif but you can get the idea.

I started taping and painting some of the smaller pieces earlier this week, so here are some pics I grabbed so far...

Power Supply Before:

Power Supply After:

Finished modifying the Case Top:

Broke the case down last night, sanded and primed the back and motherboard tray this morning:

Took some pics this afternoon after coat #2:

Had some free time, so decided to paint the RAD on the Corsair H50 until I decide what I want to do with the custom loop.

Rad prep:

Emblem for Front Panel:
The plan is for the outside to be white with the arrowhead and logo red. Originally I was going to cut the arrowhead out, but I think it will look better whole for what I plan to do.

This came with finger prints or something on it out of the box, so I had to clean it up good before painting.

That's all for now, will post more later.

Thanks

Hi Folks, So... The Newegg shipping epidemic seems to still have my stuff waiting for "packaging"...so I wait... and wait... In the mean time, some of the stuff I painted this weekend seems to be finally dry enough to really handle. Long drying times from the cold don't go well for the impatient. biggrin.gif

Corsair H50 turned out ok. One spot near the tubing I would have to sand and repaint if I was going to use, but since Newegg is slow, I am just going to go straight to a custom loop. Working that out tonight and will post more tomorrow.

I think the handles turned out pretty good. I only painted one of each. I plan to only use one of the quick release and drive bay handles with a bottom radiator setup.

Poor empty case needs more work:

More to come....

Cheers

Doing some work on the water loop. I decided to go with the following config:

CPU: XSPC Raystorm AMD

GPU: EK GeForce 660 GTX VGA

Radiator: XSPC EX360 & XSPC EX240 (sides painted red or maybe white)

Fittings: Thinking Monsoon Red

Reservoir: XSPC Dual 5.25" Bay Reservoir
XSPC Dual 5.35 Bay Cover - White

Pump: XSPC D5

Controller: White Bitfenix Recon 5 Channel Fan Controller

Cable Management:
3-Pin Power Distribution PCB 3xWay Block
3-Pin Power Distribution PCB 5xWay Block

RAD FANS:
NZXT 140's up top (painted red)
5 x Phobya G-Silent 12 1500rpm Red LED

Front Fans, Exhaust & Internal adjustable fan:
2 x Phobya G-Silent 14 1100rpm Red LED
2 x Akasa 14cm Viper - Yellow

Trying to decide if it would be better to go RES --> 240 ---. 360 --> CPU --> GPU -- RES or the way I drew it up below? I think cabling will be cleaner if I start 360 to CPU like the drawing below.

Cheers

I will put something together for the cooling components once I get them all ordered and assembled. I will just have to hide it from the wife. wink.gif

Next questions is after paint... white or black rivets? I got black rivets because that is what came with the case, but I kind of like the contrast of the white rivets with the red paint. Any suggestions?

I think the PCI slot covers are going to look nice once I get the frame finished. It has been cold and humid, so a challenge to paint. I still need a few more coats on the main pieces and need to paint all the fan housings. I think it might be time for a garage heater. thumb.gif Maybe the weather gods will be nice to me and I can paint Sunday. I would like to start some assembly next week, but not until I am happy with the paint. I start vacation in a week, so should have plenty of time to focus on the build.

A little side note on the PCI covers. I originally painted them with white plasti-dip thinking if I didn't like it I would just peel it off. So... peeling it off was easy on the ends, but over the air holes or in the air holes... not so much. A small wire brush attachment on my Dremel tool took everything off the top, but the pesky plasti-dip didn't want to come out of the holes. I soaked them in rubbing alcohol for 20 minutes and used an old toothbrush to get the plastic rings to come out. Worked pretty well. Ended up sanding, priming, and painting them. Just thought I would share in case anyone has that issue in the future or is thinking about using plasti-dip on pci covers with a million holes.

Cheers & Thanks for all those reading!
